| i finally got enough "practice" done taking/remaking old bucktails and broke out the new components. i wish i'd started doing this years ago...pretty easy, saves a lot of money, and it's a fun way to pass the winter. on the double-10s i too like to put a hook (5/0) near the blades, just far enough down to not hang up in the blades. i'd added a hook like this to any double-10s i was throwing that didn't come with one, and i've got a few blades with teeth mark dents... 1) rubber/rubber/tinsel 2) tinsel 3) firefly flashabou/rubber 4) marabou/firefly 5) tinsel/shakertail we'll see if the cheapo tinsel holds up. if not, i'll just replace it with real flash and reassemble the lure on a new wire. Posts: 2024 | 70pounder, That should be a sweet little stick of dynamite! Small profile behind those big blades might even increase your hooking percentages (beyond what a normal bucktail exhibits)! Fish4, As long as you don't "pin" the beads and body to the shaft by jamming them up to the loop then your clevises should spin just fine. I leave a little space at the top so this doesn't happen. | Pete Yake and others, Regarding the coil used as a base for tying your material on... Stop by a welder's shop or business that does welding and ask them if they could save you a liner from a wire-feed welder. It's just like the choke/throttle cable others have suggested but it'll probably be free. These liners are what the welding wire feeds thru. Every so often these get kinked or wear out and then they're junk. Most welders just toss them in the trash. Just one welder liner will be a lifetime supply for many of us basement "bucktail" guys. See a sample liner in the pic below. As far as clamping this coil for tying your "stuff" onto it... I've been using a fly tying vise for years. Take a short piece of .050 wire and bend one end back onto itself. Cut a piece of liner about 3/4 inch long. String your small piece of wire thru the coil and cut the wire so it sticks thru the coil about 1/4 inch or so (enough for your vise to clamp down on). Then Clamp the wire in your vise. See the pics below that show what I've just described including the coil clamped in the vise with thread wrapped around the coil -- ready to start applying your flash-a-bou, rubber, maribou, or maybe even bucktail. Hope this helps. Here's another idea for clamping the coil. I watched the guys at Musky Mahem tying the flash-a-bou on coil and they just had a small vise grip welded to a clamp that was fastened to their table. They just clamp the coil into the vise grip and start wrapping. I even saw Thorne Bros sells that vise grip clamp setup -- didn't notice the price, though. Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense.
