Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | I recently took the cover off my boat to discover that it had leaked water in, and there is mold growing in several parts of my plywood boat decking. (underside of hatches etc) I'm sure it is growing everywhere there was alot of moisture including carpet. My question is, what is the best way to treat this? I would like to kill all the spores, prevent future mold, while not hurting the aluminum hull with harsh chemicals or fading the paint, staining the carpet etc... Any suggestions?

Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | Same problem on my deck. Tried a number of things, but the mold keeps coming back. Was told by the dealer to clean it with bleach and let it dry in a warm sun this summer. However, looks more and more like I will be replacing the deck. Good luck. WH

Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | I would think Bleach may be too harsh, and would eat away at any vinyl, or rubber material it came in contact with. Plus I would probably spill a gallon and ruin all my carpet. Is peroxide a good bleach-free alternative? Amonia? Edited by Willis 4/16/2008 2:34 PM

Posts: 516 Location: Kildeer, IL | Mold sucks. Once it starts growing, it is hard to get rid of. On the plywood sections, you could sand it down and re-prime or use epoxy resin. For all of the carpet, I would hit it with a high pressure sprayer (i.e. self car wash), and then rent a carpet cleaner from home depot, and clean the area multiple times. Make sure to buy the shampoo with the mold killer. Then let the boat bake in the sun for a day or two with all of the lids open. This will work as long as you don't keep moisture in your boat. As soon as you lock moisture in again, it will come back. Get some of the moisture absorbers from Boat US and place them in your boat when you are putting the cover on.

Posts: 227 Location: New Brighton, MN | I bought some mold control spray at Home Depot. I think i'll sand down the exposed wood on the underside, spray it with the mold control spray, then just keep an eye on it. Maybe put some Kilz on it? As far as the carpet goes, there's just a small area that might be compromised, so I think i'll just dry it out real good, and keep an eye on it. I store it indoors in the winter (except this past winter) and on a boat lift all summer, so this was a fluke. (I hope) ![]()
