want to hit the cave in late september. I'd like to hire a guide for a day, how much will it cost? And are there camp grounds around the lake?

There are several guides on the lake. Here are some websites that should help you get started, battlethebeast.com, caverunmuskie.com, kymuskie.com, and crashslanding.com. I do not know their current rates, but would imagine200-250. there are several campgrounds at Cave run, they should all be able to give you more details on them.

tomyv, how late? Mauser + I will be there on Monday,Oct.1st. I'll probably go up that Sunday or maybe even Saturday. We are fishing w/ one of Crashs' guides. Just sold my boat so if I don't have another by then. I'll be in a green Montero LS; w/ boat an '87 green shortbed Ford. We will be staying behind Crashs at Garmins or Don Waddles lodge. Let me know!

Decembers in Kentucky can really be hit or miss. usually we get a warm weekend or 2 and the fishing is usually great. The fish can be shallow or just off structure. Cobbs, suicks, burts, or any other slow jerkbait can really shine. The key is watching the water temps and the baitfish. The only thing that can shut down fishing is a major coldfront, or drawdown(it changes from year to year).

Handyman,
The musky season is open year round in Kentucky. The water's never solid, so fish are catchable []
