I guess I can only back the trailer in so far with an esox mag. Went to put the boat on and everything looked fine until the last second when the boat slipped down and hit the roller. Put a small crack in the front. Didnt hit very hard at all but it ended up putting a pretty small crack up front. I'm not too worried about it, but is there a cheap way of maybe fixing it? I very little ideas when it comes to fiber glass or whatever the part that got damaged is.

Thanks for your time!

I think the part I cracked is some kind of plastic. Does anyone who knows Tuffy boats know how I can patch this? If possible, I'd like to use the same solution. Thanks!

it's hard to tell exactly from the pics, but it looks like it might be a chip in the gel coat?
or is it in the plastic/rubber gunnel bumper thing?

Can't you ask Tuffy for a small container of gel coat, and then just sand it and re-apply a new layer?

A few years ago I owned a Key West fiberglass boat, and had a small chip in the gel coat on the chine. So I called KW and they offered to send me a pint of the gel coat to repair it. Well, I ended up selling the boat, but the point is that the manufacturer has the gel coat for your boat--and if the damage is truly to the gel coat, then get some from Tuffy and fix the damage. The color may not match *exactly* of course, but a slight mismatch is far better than a big ding in that spot!

Bro, duct tape and some elmers glue. Way to "break her in"... hahaha! Wasn't that her maiden voyage?

hardware stores sell fiberglass repair kits. i've used them with great success in the past, basically a patch and some hardener, it'll take paint once it dries

no, not her maiden voyage. actually, 4th or 5th time out and every other time has been error free. the thing is, everytime i go fishing with this specific person, something bad just has to happen. he's not very experienced at backing the boat up, so I did all of that and just had him put the tailer in the water. too far!

Don't forget that when you go to sand that area for the repair, it's going to get bigger.

If you don't know how repair fiberglass yourself, I would personally find a fiberglass guy locally, get him some gel coat from Tuffy, and pay him a few bucks to repair it...and maybe learn something in the process for the *next* time there's a ding.

That really bites. Sorry that happened. I know it bites to have your rig damaged...My trailer got totaled last fall and Ranger sent up a new one...Heckel's put my boat on it and sent me on my way, a happy camper...so we all thought....until when I was sweeping under it in the garage and noticed the hull of the boat was suspended a full 5-6 inches above the inside two bunks. I think they did a hull redesign and now that new trailer does not fit my boat. So now I am again without a rig while Heckels figures out what to do.

Would it be worth it to file an insurance claim---not sure what year your boat is, but if it's fairly new, you'll want it to look nice and that could mean a pro repair job.

Best luck,

If you want call Tuffy and see if you can drive up to Lake Mills and have it taken care of. It sounds like you don't have a lot of fiberglass experience, so perhaps the drive up there wouldn't be too bad...

After reading the replies to this thread, contacting Tuffy or talking with a professional may be the best way to go about it

i'd give Tuffy a call and see if you can take it up to the factory.
it's not very far from where you live, it's a quick job, and you know they'd do it right and get the color matched properly.
i just had mine over there to touch up a couple spots on the hull before selling it, and you could not tell the difference from brand new.
if you talk real nice, you'll probably be surprised how inexpensive it is as well.

I agree with Lambeau.I took my my Tuffy to the factory to repair some operator error damage. The work was done promptly and very reasonably priced. I could not tell where the repairs were made.

The gelocat chip is an easy repair........But, if you look closely the running crazes are a bigger concern and need to be repaired. This is not a 10 minute fix. My suggesstion is to call and work out a time to deliver the boat to Tuffy. They will work out the repair details. Looking at the back-log, it would be completed within a week. Call 800-359-4416 as for Steve B.

Brandon, at least you didn't dump her on the pavement today! You did almost sink us though, we were shallow enough we could have jumped out and beached it.

That had to be the funniest thing I have ever seen, even though you gotta feel kind of bad for them! It was sweet to hook into a fish 10 minutes after though!

As for the crack, it really is just a ding and it would be pointless for me to drive all the way to the factory to have a 1 inch ding repaired. Thanks for all the info. though, I appreciate it!

Definitely not pointless because water will get in there and only expand it. Sooner you get it fixed the fewer problems you will have in a couple of years. Cracks will spider further and weaken the area that is damaged.

Ryan, are you serious??? No way... haha just kidding dude. Of course it will only get worse, but I think its something I can handle. When I first saw it I thought it was a lot worse than it really is. I will give Tuffy a call and see if they can tell me what materials I should get. If I were closer and diesel wasnt 1,897 dollars a gallon I would drive out there and wouldnt mind paying them to do it, but like you, I'm still paying for school! You been out on Shelbyville lately?

I was out two weekends ago and saw 4 fish, and missed one on the 8. We moved one fish back where you were asking about, but I'm getting hammered with exams, projects, and odds and ends. I will be out there may 16-18. Actually I'm on government scholarship so I don't have to pay for school, but nearly everything else.
