Sorry to take up board space but I just read something about something that can infect our computers at 8:00 tonight on Windows 95 98 etc. whatever that means! Wish the wife was here but she + little Sponge are on a night out + I don't know JACK about these things.... should I turn this thing off at 8:00 tonight? The REAL Bob is on at that time(Nickelodeon) + I was wondering when it is safe to come back on...any new info.?[:0]

Sponge, go to Microsoft.com so see if your vulnerable or not, there is a download to update your system. Very easy to update and install, almost dummy proof I’d say. It wouldn’t hurt to make sure your anti-virus software is current too. I just updated my network and according to Symantec I’m safe, but I’m still gonna shut down the network tonight. This computer stuff is easy; anybody can be a network administrator. When all else fails just turn it off and on.

Based on this article,

http://www.cnn.com/2001/TECH/internet/07/30/code.red/index.html

The worm only affects those running MS Windows NT or 2000 and also running IIS in conjunction with NT or 2000. Basically, you are in danger if you are a server.

Very few home computers will have this set up. If you do, beware.

The one you should be worried about, as a typical "at home" user, is the Sircam worm. It comes to you as an email saying something like, "I send you this to get your advice". Do not open that attachment. I have received four of these in the last couple of days. Luckily, I knew what they were and deleted them immediately.

As with many of these viruses, you cannot get the virus by opening the email to read it. You CAN get the virus by opening the attachment contained in the email.

The best bet is never open any email attachment that has either:

1. Come from an unknown sender
2. Comes from a friend but was not solicited or expected by you. (i.e. your good friend sends you some strange email with an attachment.) The best thing to do in that case is ask your buddy if they meant to send you something before you decide to open it.

Delete suspect email immediately!

Also, get antivirus software and learn how to update the "definition" files. Definition files are what the anti-V software uses to recognize a virus. If you do not do that, you are hamstringing your antivirus software. Since the software cannot see into our viral future, it has no idea what''s coming so, as new viruses emerge, the software companies make new definition files available to recognize the new viruses. Your anti-V software is counting on you to keep it up to speed. Download early, download often. Be diligent and you won''t have a problem.

Jono

Thanks dudes! I'm dead if I screw up my wifes' program testing stuff for her office; not a court in this land would convict her either! Think I'll just kick back for tonight although I'd like to get on about 8:10 just to see what happens..... better to leave the house altogether. I don't even know what an attachment is. Anyway thanks for the info.....[::)]

Another virus that has been making the rounds lately (My pc included (dern wife)) is one called w32magistr.mm it is a worm that, once active on your computer, will attach itself to dll files and then send itself out to everyone on your e-mail list (especially outlook). it attaches files from your computer. Most people will receive and e-mail from you (that you never sent) with garbage text in the narrative section. BUT, some can actually receive the exe attachment as well. I was able to clean my system with no problem, but some people i know had infected files they could not. They had to delete the files and re-install them. [:((]
Upadated virus defintions takes care of this one.

Thanks Dave + above concerned citizens! Had I not recieved this advice + heeded it I would at this time be officially dead at this time. Since this is my only form of communication w/ the outside world I can't afford to tick off the wife since she is QUEEN + I was created to serve her as I am but a worm that crawls to please her! Hope she sees this one[:praise:] [:sun:]
