| Ok, for the 2nd time this year I've watches a fish as i've pitched baits at it to have it not even move. I am wondering how the heck this works? What works best for sightfishing? I have tried reapers, bucktails and a 9" bulldawg. |

| Zach, you might try coming back a little later or ease out + approach from a different angle, especially if the fish has seen you; has worked for me in the past...if the shore is clean you can pitch the bait up there + ease it into the water...you might also try dragging a topwater by the fish...sometimes though nothing you do can get their attention! | Shu, You've got to get the fish moving. I've heard of some people driving the boat around where the fish are to get them to move. Once they get moving you've got a better chance of making them hungry. |

| Thanks Sponge and Treats...will try that stuff. |

| Ususally if you can see the fish, and it is very shallow, it will be tough to trigger. I have never really done well, but HAVE caught a couple doing the little bitty bait toss right in front of them. I use a small Rapala.[:0] |

| Do this: get a 8/0 treble hook and a big weight......[;)] |

|
| Hey Schuler,
The best way for me to get them to trigger was throwing a stand up type jig, like the Esox Cobra jig by Bait Rigs, with a lizard attached.....black/navy blue glitter has been the best.....and drop it about 3 feet away, in front of their nose.
Start jiggling the rod tip....using a 7'6" flippin' type rod....when the fishes tail rises off the bottom, give it a rip, and hang on.
If the muskie's tail doesn't start coming up within about two minutes, it ain't happening!!

| I’ve caught a few sight fishing. They weren’t sitting still though. They were cruising the shoreline. I’d sit out on the dock and look back towards the shoreline, when I’d see one swim by I would toss a bass sized sluggo right in front of it. More fish spooked than caught though. The sluggo works best without a leader. |

| The only muskie I ever caught sight fishing was on a fly. I suggest going much smaller in your lure selection. |

| Schuler, over the years I have caught several by sight fishing them. I have had the best luck on my home lakes here of course. I throw a 1/4 oz jig with a red shad 6" worm trailer. Seems to work about 20 to 25% of the time. Can make for a great day on some lakes. Bone or Deer Ihave seen up to 20 fish a day. This translates into a lot of bites. Been hearing stories about sight fishing on the sand flats on the North end of Mille Lacs. Or is this supposed to be a secret?
Let 'em go so that Ashton can catch 'em.....Mike[:sun:] |

| I have caught a few muskies by first spotting them, then targetting them. Half of those have been caught on mepps #5's, 45% of them on a Cisco Kid Topper, and 1 on a beetle spin with my ultra lite (that was a fun battle for a 33"er!!)
I agree with the others that you need to get the muskies attention and get it moving. |

| I thought this was a PETA thread. Hooks can hurt fish. Don't use a rod, real, line, and hook. Instead, hop in the boat and travel around the lake looking for fish. When you spot one yell, "THERE'S ONE". Then continue on because you don't want to disrupt the fish. I sight fish every day. There is a pond on my way into work, and I sight little blue gills in there. (Man I'm starting to sound like Sponge Bob. I just need to add a bunch of "+" to my thread)
On a more serious note, I haven't gotten any muskies to bite when I spot them in the shallows. I have gotten many bass to bite, but that doesn't count. |

| The only way I have ever caught a fish that I have seen and then tried to cast at it was with a SMALL bait. A #5 Mepps, 5 inch Slammer or jig's. When the fish are real shallow it seems to be best with a suttle presentation and a bait that hit's the water with out spooking them. |

| This does certainly work> I have several clear water lakes and we crise the rock bars looking for fish. If we see them we have an excellent chance of catching them. Lizards have beeh our beat bait so far. It appears to that the really clear lakes have been the best and nots often you run into a hot day doing this but we have had a few dats of 3 or fish caught this way. I do prefer slight chop on the water and this helps to draw the fish onto the shallow bars. I also do this during peak periods.

| Surprised no one mentioned this already but Tom Dietz just had an article on sight fishing in the last issue or Musky Hunter Magazine, I just finished reading it and tought it would help you a lot. |

| Thanks a lot everyone. It sounds like I need to buy some mepps 5's and more jigs. As far as Deitz's article, I already ready it..a few times. But its mostly about fish that are moving. Very informative too. There is also an article in the newest esox angler thats pretty cool. |
