Posts: 2091 Location: Stevens Point, WI | I am shooting for a 50" this season, I have caught many below that with 48.5" being my biggest. Though I definately plan some days on the water for just numbers.

Posts: 578 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | Put me down for that 50"er. I have them up to 49.5" (and a Wisconsin one at that), but haven't cracked that "magic 50" yet. This will be the year. Chuck

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Jeff, If your talking the whole season I would opt for the slot year in and year out. As much I enjoy targeting big fish I gotta get slimed every so often to help keep it fun. Dude we gotta try and get together this year....

I'm nuts about musky fishing! Could you tell?

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Handyman, one of my new goals in 2003 is to crack the 50 mark on my home lake. With time on the water the numbers will come but the 50 mark is what I am after this year.

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I want a 50"er so bad I can taste it, 15 years and counting without one. Giving the choice though I would take 30 quality fish rather than pound the water all year to get one. Maybe that's why I don't have a fifty yet!!!

Posts: 46 Location: Hugo, Mn | At this point in my pursuit of muskie, I would go for the numbers (just started last year). Hopefully by the end of the year I will be changing my answer.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | I've been thinking about the same thing. I was just talking to Monica last night, as she asked me if I was going to try to repeat what we did last year, and told her I knew we were not going to have the time with the wedding and all to fish quite as much as 02 so I really want to focus on a big fish. That said, secretly I'd still go with your answer Jeff(though I'd like to tweak that to 30 fish from 34-48). Give me a call about maybe going on sunday!! hopefully we get 5 inches of rain tonight!!! Location: Milwaukee | My son and I would opt for the 30 plus fish, it's just so much fun to feel the strike and set that hook!!!!! If it only happened once in a year, that would suck......

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | Having never caught a Fifty, and having many seasons with over 30 34" + fish, I would opt for quality over quantity. This is of course when fishing for just the fun. In tourneys I want lots of 34"s of course.

Posts: 1430 Location: Eastern Ontario | I'll take the 30, but I would have to fish somewhere else. It would be to hard for me to catch 30 without a 50 in my waters. ![]()

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I will take the 30 as well. If I fished canada maybe my opinion would be different. They have the size limits to produce those fish.

Interesting question, and I wonder if the results could be used to show why Wisconsin turned down the 50" size limits on selected lakes in Vilas and Oneida cty. Numbers over size, that seems to be the popular choice. I would have to say if a person catches 30 muskie in a year (with your dimensions) they are doing something right consistently. If they catch only 1 muskie (even if it is 50") then there is a LOT of luck involved that it was that big. This past week a 6 yr. old kid from Iowa caught a 50" muskie in Clear Lake, IA using a Snoopy pole with 4 lb. test and stinkbait, from shore, fishing for catfish. His mom jumped in and helped him land it. I take my hat off to him but I don't think that makes him a good muskie fisherman. Just lucky. (The story is on a lot of the musky websites) I confess, I would have to go with the numbers too. I'll take the 30 fish. If I caught only 1 fish all year (even a 50"), it would be a bad blow to my confidence. Scott
