Was on Bemidji on Saturday but left early and headed to Big.

The water on Bemidji looks like Chocolate Milk!!!! It was very tan with a clarity of only a couple of feet, I couldn't see anything in that lake. I haven't been on Bemidji since opening week, does anyone know why it is like this and how long it has been like that???????

I have only been fishing it for a few years but I never remember it looking like that......

I heard thru the grape vine that Loran Rass is catching some really nice fish on Bemidji this year. I have fish that lake before myself and it sure has throphy potental with the good cisco base.

I talked to a DNR representative conducting the creel survey at the Nymore Beach landing on Bemidji and he said that for a while the lake was pretty hot, but since the water turned brown (in the last week) no one has been catching fish of any type.

He said that this year he has talked to Muskie fisherman from as far away as Indiana and Illinois, one person he talked to caught ten over 40 in a week in early July. It sounded like there were alot of 40 inch fish caught so far this year and several over 50.

I did move a few fish on Big on Saturday, had a 40+ eat the rubber tail off of one of my Bucktails, it then proceeded to follow the rest of the lure to the boat but it got spooked and swam off. Had a couple of other follows on topwater lures.......

Water temp was about 73, spent a great deal of time trying to mark some spots into the GPS.

There was NOBODY fishing on Saturday on Big or Bemidji, only a couple of other boats and no musky fisherman[] .

I'm probably the guy that the DNR survey guy was refering to. Actually the numbers are better than that, fishing was exceptional for about 2 weeks on Bemidji, it has dropped off a bit since then. It's still worth fishing occasionally, but my efforts will get concentrated on Cass for a good portion of the remaining season. Gotta fish where they wanna eat. Later

Sackett,

What was the water clarity like when you fished Bemidji, was it as stained as it is now??????

Thanks for the info,

John

....Hmmmm..... I was considering trying Lake Bemidji sometime in the next 2-3 weeks.... Does this mean that I should forget it, since apparently the fish are shutting down due to the tanning/staining of the water?

Also, does this affect night fishing, at all?

Lastly, any advice on where to stay (lodging) that's not an arm and a leg?

Thanks!

Try the Edgewater, its right as you pull into Bemidji on the south side of the lake, less than a block from the Nymore beach landing. From what I hear it is pretty reasonable......

I don't have their number though..........

If the fishing doesn't pick up on Bemidji you will still be centrally located between Cass, Big, Plantanganette and several other lakes, sounds like a sweet deal to me.
Good Luck,

John B

Well you never know when Bemidji is gonna be worth fishing, after the middle of July. The best rule to follow for that lake is, if you aren't seeing any they probably arent going. I havent fished Bemidji in over a week, the last 2 times out I didnt see much of anything, so it's time to try new things. But, you never know, Bemidji and it's cousins can get red hot all of a sudden. But for me, it's big water time. Later

JohnB and Sackett:

Thanks very much for the helpful advice! Please keep us updated on the water clarity.... especially if the chocolate milk begins to clear up....
