I dont know if you have a Gander Mountain out there by you but the Gander Guide series rods are very good and are a good price. I've heard good things on some of the shimano rods, but I have never personally used one. As for reels, dont skimp. I use Abu's. They are a good price and I havent had much of a problem with them. Another option that I would highly recommend would be Okuma's gear. The induron is a great real and the telescoping rods they have are also very nice with a price that wont break the bank.

Hope this helps.

Bass Pro Shops "Pete Maina" rod and reel. Good choice for starting out.

Two good options in a low priced and mid-priced set up:
- Gander Guide Series IM8 Rod and Guide Series 66 Reel
- Okuma EVX Rod and Induron Reel
