Posts: 373 Location: Browerville, Minnesota | In that price range I would say look at the Gander guide series or perhaps the Shimano Compre. I have both of these rods and like them very much. Last year I was able to pick up a very nicely used 8 ft St Croix off of the boards here for $120.00 and it is a sweet rod. I have a 7000i on it and it pulls DCG's and DC-10's like nothing.

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Hey AJ, everybody has their preference as to what is "best". Here is mine. If I could I would get an All Star, but they are not made anymore. Rats! But that said I have heard good things about these rods, like Bret says the Compre is one, and Okuma & Maina's Bass Pro Series Rods are a couple of othesr. Either one of these rods, I think you will be happy to throw any of those rods. Best to try to get your hands on them and try them, yes I know that would be a tall order in NE.

Posts: 167 Location: Minnesota | Shimano Compre is a great rod for the price, I know that they make an 8' 6" model. Pete Maina Bass Pro Rods also has a 8' 6" model, from what I hear those are great rods too. If you want longer than 8'6", Keith at ProEdge has the new Edge series which are awesome, but that is going to run you a little more $$$, and he can make those probably 9'6". Any of those rods will handle big tails,, tight lines, Dan

Posts: 2024 | For your price range I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the Shimano Compre 8' (XH). You'll be able to throw big bucktails, dawgs, big cranks with ease.

Posts: 457 | I have two 8'6" Okuma on their way to me, give me a shout sometime, and you can get your mitts on one, give it a shot. I've also got several versions of 8' rods from different manufacturers, as well as a DB 7'6" built to 8'. Little more expensive but a GREAT rod for doing exactly what you are talking about.
