I got a message yesterday from some anonymous guy on another website, telling me about a 27-inch bucktail he constructed and is having success with. I've never heard of such a thing before - let alone a lure of that length which is over 2-feet long.

I'm dumbfounded. Can this be just a tall-tale? Anyone ever hear of such things? Can something like this possibly exist?

With as many people as there are making bucktails out there I don't see it as that hard to do. All I know is that I would not want to be throwing it!

Often while fishing in the weeds I throw an 11" bucktail but by the time it gets back to the boat it's at least 27".

Location: Land of the Musky		Sure. Look at all the pictures you see of a 45" muskie dead with a 30" pike in it mouth. Like reelman said though, who woudl want to throw it or troll it when a 10 inch bucktail will catch em. Altough, I bet the muskies don't see too many 27 inch bucktails!

Well, for reference the bucktail below is a good 16 inches and the guy who made it has made bigger. Up to 24 I believe. The wood bait below is around 28 and I've thrown it. Haven't moved anything on it but it is possible. The hook is on a bucktail I've got that runs just shy of 24.

Wishmasters are big baits and they work, so why wouldn't a bucktail that size?

Location: The desert		I'd say definately. I know my buddy has one that is pretty big, I think 16 or so inches. With all the musky conditioning going on these days, I'd have to agree with Tacklebooty and I bet they arent conditioned to seeing 27 inch tails! Maybe that guy is onto something?

My same buddy, as well as myself each have what some might call a "Giant Manta". His is just shy of 30 inches mine comes in at 31 inches. He's tossed his a bit and it runs pretty good, mine is getting painted and is just about done. Muskynightmare is the painter and I might have a picture of it somewhere....I'll have to look.

But to answer your question, a 27 inch bucktail isnt really that outlandish.

Looks like Bob beat me to my post....see about for pictures of the baits mentioned.

I saw a guy at the show with one. It was 25-28" I think. The only thing is he had a tiny, green colorado blade on it.

Location: Hayward, WI		When working the "Monster Manta" what breaks first - your back or the anti reverse on the reel? Man that is crazy! I would think baits like that and a 27 inch bucktail are more or less strictly specific situation baits only. It does seem crazy, but I think we've all caught mid-sized northerns with gashes in them before.

that huge manta lookin thing kinda looks like a baseball bat that had the butt cut off of it and had the front of the bat file down to look like a manta and then they just cut a spot for the plate thing in the back.....doesnt it kinds look like a baseball that had some work done to it?

I just had to ask for some input because I'm still learning about these fishes and what to exactly use for them. This is all relatively new terminology.

You don't really throw it, you just kind of lob it. Using an 8ft xh Fig Rig toothtamer, with a ABU record, spooled with 100 pound power pro. Oddly enough there have been conditions that have dictated using much smaller baits in a way that have been harder on myself and equipment than using the gigantor manta.

Pointer and I were out a couple of years back right when the pounders came out. I was tossing a pounder and he was tossing a musky snax. Two guys come by us who were walleye fishing and asked if we were throwing rocks in the water because it sounded like it.
