Just wondering what kind of rod holders you guys have mounted on your boats.

I'm thinking about possibly buying two rod holders for the boat, sometime down the road.

Not many of my lakes in WI even allow trolling so this would most likely done for drifting suckers and what-not... or row trolling... If it happens.

I'd like to keep my limit to $30 or less. So far all I've really checked out are the Scotty Powerlocks which run for about $25 apiece and I've heard good things about them.

Thanks for any advice or ideas.

I personally like Down East S-10's. In my opinion they are the toughest rod holder for the money and will pretty much last you forever. They are extremely quick when removing the rod and are a snap to adjust. I saw some at Sportsmans Warehouse the other day for around $23 a piece and I think I remember seeing them in Gander for about the same amount.

If you do a search you'll get some good input, but I agree with Nate. I run the Down Easters as well. I have the rail mounts, but I've used the S10s as well. If you get the clamp ons, get the S10's with the double clamps not the single clamp.
You will not break these holders, and I think you'll find quite a few guys that use them on this site.

I also use downeasters, the S-17 model that bolts to the gunwale. Very good units.

I really like the Folbe Rod Holders. Designed for Salmon angler in the Pacific NW, these things are well built, and will take anything a muskie can dish out. Click on the link below, and check out the video. Multiple mounting options, they won't chew up the handles like some others.

RAM-117. A little more expensive than $30, but I lost the biggest fish of my life on a $30 rod holder

I used to run the Down East rigs(still do on my old rig), and liked them alot, though the drawbacks had me shopping for something else when I got the newer rig. I also went with the Folbes(on Sheps recomendation), and I think it was one of the best decisions/purchases I have made for the boat. They work in a similar fashion to the Down Easts, though the annoying rod hang/lock-up when a fish hits or snag occurs, never happens, as the back portion of the holder remains stationary. One can actually work them with one hand when taking them out or putting the rod back in, which is also important to me, running a tiller.

Again, I really like the Down East set-ups, will continue to run them in temproary situations, and you wouldn't go wrong with them. However, be sure that you keep Folbes on your radar. In my opinion, they took many of the really good features of several rod holders, and built them into one. After using them for a fall trolling on Green bay, I realize they are tough as nails too. The drawback, they are a bit more than $30.00, though I'd suspect you'd be happy with them for many years to come.

Ditto on the Folbe's. I use them on Green Bay in cold weather. These aren't your average plastic rod holders. They are very strong and very easy to use.

I was planning on putting the Down Eastern rod holders on my new boat, I just looked at the Folbe video and was impressed. One question can you put the net handle in them for unhooking and releasing a fish while by yourself? This is one thing a like about the Down Eastern holder.

Thanks,
Tom P.

I have a rubber gasket on my Beckman handle that doesn't allow it to slide through the Folbe, so yes, they work. They also lock and unlock so they will not open if lock is chosen. They are quicker to pivot downward than my DE, so work great for that maneauver in my opinion.

Jason, that's the nice thing about the rail mount down easters. They are easy to move the rods as you only have to push the butt of the rod up or down. The downfall is when they loosen or the rubber gets wet when they are loose, they sometimes go straight down on you if you aren't paying attention. (that makes for a giant mess if you don't see it happen). The nice thing is, you just have to tighten them up to fix that problem.

That being said, it's usually only when dragging dipsys that I have that problem.

Down Easters that have a custom mount, and then slide into a tract. The mounts and tracts are made by Pursuit Sports.
It's a great setup and allows for a lot of flexibility.

I also have some down riggers (Canon Mag-10's) which I have never used. They fit into this tract system as well.

Even though the Down Easter are pretty dependable ... I keep telling myself I am going to find some safety straps just in case. I suppose after I've lost a nice trolling rig ... will I then ultimately get those straps.

Yup, the folbes can be pivoted right down without loosening rail mount too. I didn't know if I'd like that they were easily pivoted at first, that way, but now really like it for quick adjustments while trolling multiple boards.

I've used the Down East rod holders for several years now with no complaints.
