New to painting guys. When painting old shad raps; should I sand the lure first or just go ahead and paint it? What type of paint base should I use? Water base or laquer base? Thanks for any help.

You would want to either use fine sand paper, 220 grit works well, or a coarse steel wool, scuff the lure up well, wipe it down with a paint thinner, nothing to strong though, or it will eat the exhisting paint you are painting over, use a white base coat if you want your colors to be bold, and for my money, I'd use a solvant base paint, however I've heard some of the water based stuff is pretty durable, I just use solvant based paints because I'm used to them, and they work well and are very durable, as for the clear coat, their are many to choose from, epoxy based, laquer base, urathane base,ect....
good luck with your project.

If its a beaten up rap i´d suggest you use propionate to fix the lure .Paint is personal preference
