Does anyone know anything about this reel? This is being talked about as a more affordable version of the trinidad.

6.4:1 and 47.2" per crank.

i spent some time at the Chicago show talking to the Shimano rep about the Trinidad and Torium reels and how they compare.
the Shimano Torium is the same design as the Trinidad for half the price.
some slight differences include being made in Malaysia rather than Japan, cast instead of machined frame, 3 bearings vs 6.
i don't have any first-hand experience with either reel, and i'm a bit hesitant to buy a reel without a levelwind until i've tested it myself, but if you're looking for a less-expensive Trinidad, this is obviously something worth considering.

So would you want the 14 which picks up 36" of line with a weight around 15.7oz or the 16 which picks up 46" and weighs around 22.4 oz? Is the difference in line worth the extra weight?

This is a specialist reel for ONE THING ONLY to burn size double 13 blade bucktails at mach speed, you will not be able to use it for anything but burning bucktails. A reel with no levelwind needs all the help to cast it, that is why I like the Trinidad TN16N the narrow spool will help alot with birdnests, and yes you will get them alot. This reel has a 46" line pick-up and with the size of gears it will smoke a bucktail. You chould go for weeks before the time is right for this setup, if they want speed, you will be able to give it to them, like they have never seen it before. Daiwa Saltist STT30TH, Penn TRQ100 and Avet SX5 and Okuma Titus Gold TG10S and the Tica Sea Wave SW468V-H will work but all have a wider spool.

Lambeau--roger that---torium looks like an affordable alternative---I've not had good luck with Daiwa, anyhow.

Pikemaster--I think the application with this reel might be more widespread than you indicate....experimentation will tell....could be a new frontier.
