Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Stay with the 80lb stuff, the line dia. is still small enough to allow the 1oz. lures to still have a lot of action.....and you won't loose a big fish as easy.

Location: On your favorite spot | margin for error goes way down with 80# - also casts better
50# will work for awhile, but when it goes it'll go fast and will be more susceptible to failure from knicks, I say why take a chance?

i ran 50lb Spider Wire Stealth on my light bucktail rod this year. it worked just fine, no failures, no backlash-lost lures, etc., etc.
i preferred it over the 80lb because i was using a smaller low-profile reel on that rig and i could get more line on the spool due to the smaller diameter.
i was careful to set my drag appropriately, i didn't lock it down tight like i do with higher strength line. the rod also has a lighter action, so when fighting a fish i let the rod do the work and didn't horse it. i also made sure not to use it for heavy lures that would strain the line on a backlash where the drag wouldn't be able to release.
as far as "only use 80lb" or "only use 100lb"?
if the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail...
some jobs call for a different tool.
