What are some of the pros and cons on the Abu BG 7000 HSN? This would be the gold one. I am thinking about picking one up and wanted to get some feedback from you guys before laying down the cash. I have a 7000 Pro Rocket that I picked up off the buy and sell here (thanks Lambeau) and it has worked great.
Let me know what you think!

Thinking about using it for large, big, huge bucktails.

Pro-use for regular sized bucktails such as giant killers or harrassers, not for the d/c's. Good reel for topwater baits, props and walk the dog. Cons-very noisy, gears grind like a can opener and when I picked up mine when they first came out,the spool froze up. Sent it back for repairs,no problems ever since. Recommend the new black model,7000Ihsn. Good reel for jerkbaits as well. Kdawg

Definitely not the reel for that.

The Pro Rocket you already have is a perfect reel for that. The BG is not made for hard pulling baits

If you get the 7000iHSN the black one, you must lower the gears to 4.1:1, they come with 5.3:1, and clean up the inside of the reel, they come with so much oil and grease inside of them from the factory. The anti-reverse bearing and the pinion gear are the weak link in the reel.

personally the new ones are a bit better but I think you are better off with other reels for big bucktails than the abu's...in that price range I'd try the Maina reel at 4.2 to 1 or the Okuma reel, if you want one of the best for big tails get a penn 975.
imo.

Thanks for the replies. Keep em coming. The reason I am checking is that the Gander Mountain stores in Madison, WI. are closing out and right now the fishing stuff is 30% off. All the good Lowrance locator/GPS units are gone and the east side store is pretty much picked over but the west side still has some good deals. Loaded up and I do mean loaded up on lures, hooks, etc. The 7000 HSN's were down to $79.95.

When everyone says that the 7000iHSN isn't good for big bucktails, what exactly do you mean. I just got a 7000iHSN and was planning on using it for big bucktails, but only for probably 10-15 days per year. Will this reel hold up for that period of time? I got this one pretty cheap and don't really want to spend a bunch of money on another reel.

No momuskies, the question will be can you hold up? While the gears on the higher gear ratios are smaller (1 problem) this does cause the gears to wear out sooner, I think the big question is can you handle the higher torque that the higher gear ratios required when cranking such a huge load in. It kind of like drag racing where low gears will get you better ETs, but drag racing with higher (road) gears and a six cylinder will wear that motor (you) out faster.

Not that it can't be done, but you will only last a short time doing it before your hand, wrist, and arm will take it. And the reel will not last as long as a reel with a lower ratio.

Can the gears be changed from the 5.3's to a set of 4.1's? Reminds me of building up a Camaro I had. Snap your head off with the 4.11's I put in her.

I've heard talk of swapping the gears on some Abu's. Should I switch the gears to 4.1 or so? If so, does anybody have any recommendations on who to send the reel to?

Chuck Brod was demonstrating this at the Chicago show: switching 4.1 gears into the HSN frame.

Here goes again. I have had personal experience and many other people I know have, with the gold abu's...they do not make those anymore, for good reason. they fall apart and are not built very well. you are much better off paying 2 x the price for a better reel that will hold up.

the gold hsn's are the older model too....the other thing that goes wrong is the reel seat post will bend, causing the gears to grind and eventually wearing out. the new ones seem to be built better....but i went through three of them in a month. lousy reels for the big blades.....the 7000c3 has held up....like alot have said. what makes a good reel for these baits is a large spool with a lower gear ratio.
