| Hey All,
I have a 10" crankbait that was a shallow runner. Being "clever" as I am, I decided to try and make it a deep diver by filing down the original lip and then epoxying a custom cut plexy lip to the front.
Well, emphasis on "clever"... now the bait doesn't run properly at all. Ha Ha Ha.
I am not a lure builder; just a fisherman.
I think the issue is that the eyelet is in the snout of the bait and for the lip piece I glued on, I think it needs an eyelet put in through the lip.
However, considering the mess that I've already made, I could be completely wrong and the bait might need a new lip altogether.
I was wondering if I could send the bait to someone so that they might try to see if it can be fixed.
If not, no problem as the bait is currently worthless anyway.

Location: Muskegon Michigan |  Wellllll??? lets see. First mistake is trying to modify a lure that was designed to be a shallow runner. The science of Hydrodynamics comes into play when we are dealing with pulling a lure through the water. I would start with a design on paper. Decide what you want it to do and study similar baits to your design and go from there. I have over 30 designs and 11 in production. They all started on paper with sketchs and cardboard patterns . Location: Muskegon Michigan | I should have read your post alittle closer. I would ban saw the lip out and replace it with another one like the the first one. There are tons of guys here who could do that. but the cost of sending out and shipping it back and then the cost of the repairs it would be too expensive. Maybe just grind the lip back down to where it was. Kingfisher |

Sounds like I'm simply going to have to toss this one  Unfortunately, I epoxied the lexan onto the bait, etc. and I used the bottom part of the first lip as support.
Sounds wonderful doesn't it
So you don't think that adding an eyelet in a different location can have any positive effect?
Where could I buy eyelets? Perhaps I could fiddle with it myself?

| Don't toss it yet! Put up a few photos so we can see what you have. Make sure to get a good front and side view so the geometry can be seen. I have screwed up a few by trial and error and have also brought a few back from the depths of despair. You can get a twitch bait to run deeper by modifying the angle and length of the lip. You have to be careful not to bring the lead edge of the lip too far in front of the tow eye otherwise you can get a blowout condition. Belly weight can also make a bait run better.

| I tried making a Manns Sea Snake run a bit shallower by cutting the lip back a bit. Now I've got an expensive conversation piece on my wall of shame! |

Anyone need their "lips fixed"? I'm your guy. $100 per bait. Bait WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY afterward GUARANTEED! :-D
What a disaster
Based upon my experiments, I still believe that a new eyelet in the actual lip may help my endeavors but, as stated in paragraph one above, considering my "successes" to this point...

| The bait won't run because you still have the line tie on the nose.
It should be located on the center line of the lip just less than halfway to the tip of the lip. If you relocate the line tie along the lip centerline, the bait may very well run just as you hoped. But as was previously mentioned the dynamics of the bait shape are a factor also.
Try drilling a tiny hole about 1/4 inch back from the halfway way point (in other words, toward the nose) but along the center line of the lip (lengthwise) and fabricating a line tie out of wire. Test the bait and see if it runs. |

| Move the line tie as fatfingers described and that bait should run. You may also need to even up the profile from the front view which can be done with a palm sander. Looks like the lip points to the right a bit. No problem, that bait should work out just fine with a few modifications. |
