Just want everyones opinion on the best all around jerk bait rod. Looking for something that can throw reef hawgs, suicks, wades wobblers etc. I am just under 6 ft tall and fish out of a Crestliner Fish Hawk. One thing I noticed this past summer was a 7 ft 6 inch rod was too long for me to fish out of my boat. Any suggestions? It can either be a brand name rod or a custom rod from one of the many builders out there! Thanks

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I have a couple brands, and like them both. I have a couple 7' Fig Rigs, great rod. Also have a couple 7'6" Okumas, great rods. I use the Fig Rig MH for my Wabulls and the Okuma heavy action for my Suicks and Reef Hawgs.

Posts: 401 | If you are looking for a custom option there is Diamondbacks Jerkbait blank. It is the best Jerkbait blank that I have ever built on. Strong, light weight and full of power. There is very little weight to this stick when it is done. Keith

Posts: 85 | I have one of the Pro Edge Diamondback jerkbait rods and really like it. Mine is 8', as I prefer the longer rods. The "jerk" action doesn't have to be straight down at the waterline, so length is not an issue, it's actually a benefit. I used to use the 6'9" St Croix but I lost fish since it's so hard to keep the rod loaded once a fish hits. Just not enough length to taper into a tip with a bit of play to it. With jerkbaits, (I like Suicks) fish don't always hammer it, not like a straight line retrieve where you instantly know it's there. These have the backbone to hammer a hookset but the extra 15 inches of rod over the Croix I used to use that helps to keep them buttoned up. Suicks aren't that heavy at all, but the Dback still casts them as well and nearly as far as a heavier bait. I also use mine for Weagles as a heavier topwater rod. Just for fun I just went to the garage and compared my Dback 8' jerkbait rod to my 8' Dback med action bucktail rod. Almost the same blank diameter at the handle and just eyeballing, the two do not look drastically different. Jerk rod looks and feels like the lighter buck stick. Now, put my old 6'9" Croix in the mix and it would look like a saltwater rod/pool cue in comparison, probably feel like one too. That's the engineering and overall advantage of the Diamondback blanks. Don't get me wrong, I love Croix rods, as almost all my bass and 'eye rods are, but in the muskie category the difference is seen and felt tenfold. Chris
