Subject: Resort help in MN

Hi, I'm planning a family summer vacation to next year and have been looking at Pehrson's resort on Vermilion and Izaty's on Mille Lacs. Any thoughts on these resorts or suggestions for others in MN? I'm looking for a top-quality resort on muskie water that's family friendly (a total of 5 kids are going- ages 3 to 11).

I've fished Mille Lacs a few times and know the fishing can be great, but have never fished Vermilion. I'm leaning toward Pehrson's resort on Vermilion but not sure if the fishing will be good since I'm not familiar with the lake. I've boated on Vermilion though and thought it was beautiful. Any thoughts?

Thanks
Smokin Joe

Pehrson's is a nice place to stay. Since you are balancing 5 kids and fishing it is good to know they are close to a restaurant, and convenience mart and only a short drive from tower as well. The Vince shute bear thing is pretty unique and Ely is a little over an hour away for the wolf center. The fishing on vermilion is great and like you said beautiful. VDL is also a good place to stay and worth looking into. Both are on the west side.

I think you meant a short drive to Cook. Tower is on the east end of the lake and pretty far away by vehicle. VDL is in an excellent area for panfish to keep those kids busy as well as some great muskie waters. Can't go wrong there.

Vermillion is beautiful for sure, and if your staying on Mille Lacs and you are at Izatys and get a strong north east or north west wind you maybe having to trailer your boat to the other side. Kind of in the middle on the south side and you can get a little windy down there. Vermillion has so many islands and is not nearly as wide so wind is not as big of a factor out there. Depending on the time of year the north end of Mille Lacs is pretty hot, and that's a 20 mile drive by water from Izatys.

Thanks for the help! I'll check out VDL too. We usually go to LOTW but getting expensive and we'd like to try MN for a change. Plus, Vermilion had that Canadian feel to it as I remember.

Mille Lacs is good for one thing. Big Fish!! If you want the northwoods feel, go up to Vermilion. There is no "Family Fun" place on Mille Lacs despite Izayty's "Sandel's" theme.

I would say to stay up on Vermillion over Mille Lacs.  Although Mille Lacs is huge, has huge fish and alot of them, it can get pretty darn crowded and has some pretty rude boaters on it.  Vermillion reminds me more of LOTW than any other lake I have fished on.  There are so many places to fish, and like stated above, with all the islands, you can always find a calmer spot to fish, especially when the family is out with you.    Please don't get me wrong, I love Mille Lacs and fish it quite a bit, however, for a family vacation, Vermillion wins hands down.

If you can get one of the cabins at Glenwood Lodge, that would be my first pick for a place on Vermillion. www.glenwoodlodge.com. I would call now as they book up quick and for good reason.

This may help. There is a link to resorts with location so you can sort of get a feel for where things are on the lake.

I had a good time at viking bay resort on Lake Miltona. Big fish without the huge waters of Mille Lacs and Vermillion. Close to Alexandria which has many family freindly activities. Nice beach at the resort ect...

Better not choose Izatys. It is closed and for sale. No telling when somebody will buy that place. I have been to Vermillion and have a place at Izatys. I would rather Musky fish Vermillion due to all the islands and different structure. Mille Lacs is hands down better for walleye but go north of the Musky on Vermillion.

I don't know Vermillion, never been there. But I've fished Mille Lacs and man that water can get big. Waves, I mean. The wind dictated where I fished in my little 14' boat. Also, I saw a leach swim by that was at least 12" long. Skeeters so big they take you home to eat you.

On the plus side, EssoxLady (Peg) showed me some structure where I boated a 44. And I saw a big one, maybe 50. Ah, Peggy, didn't we have fun?

Um, what was the question?

You may want to consider The Cabin Connection - it's a site the offers homes - places people rent out - we've done it and had great luck (we, a bunch of guys are there to fish and have said, "this place would be great for a family, too nice for us)! Good luck - oh yeah, this place is all about homes/cabins on Vermillion

If you are looking at Leech, the resort below is a place that I have been staying at for over 7 years. I have a place in their RV Park. I have three kids that cry when they have to come home for the week. Lots of kid activities. Owners even had parents night out and they watched everybody’s kids. Owners are nice people. Lots of good fishing near the resort.

We were up in Tower this summer and stayed at Everett Bay Lodge. This resort is not fancy but is very clean and kid friendly. The have several cabins to choose from. For the kids they have a swimming pool, sand box and teter ball. They also have canoes, paddle boats and kayaks for pleasure rides in the bay at no charge.
We had a great time booked again for 2008. There is a large fire pit that is usually burning every night weather permitting. Dave and Diane are very nice. The lodge has gas, oil, bait and ice for purchase. Check out their web site www.everettbay.com
Hope this helps

I was at Pehson's this last summer for a week. I think it would be a great place for a family. They have plenty of large cabins and a nice big beach. It is right on the tar and Cook is like 5 minutes away. The only thing is it is on the extreme west side of the lake so it can be a long run of you want to fish the other side. But I have found there to be less pressure on the west side and nice weed beds. In fact there is a 50 that lives very close to the resort that likes to show herself.
