Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey everyone, I hope all had a good fishing season and have a great and safe holiday season. Well I got into some different baits That I have been playing around with. I am in the Cleveland area and the Night walleye bite is world class here believe it of not. I have always used the standard Husky jerks and rapala's for the night bite. I got to thinking I should try some homemade baits on them. I had to scale down a bit but has been fun. Most of the baits are in the 6" to the 8" range. I really excited to try them out in the spring for some musky's. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I tried some jointed ones and had very very good success on them. The orange tiger jointed one took 2 fish the one night. One was 11lbs 3 oz and the other was 10 lbs 2 oz. My friend Andy is having the big one mounted. I am the fella on the left. Both fish came 15 minutes apart!!!!!!!!! Crazy!!!!!!!! The white jointed one with the yellow head took a 10lb 3oz one that was my personal best on one of my walleye baits. It has been really fun! Here are some more pics. I hope I can get some bigger teeth marks from musky's in the spring! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | This what we had the one night with three of us on the boat. I think that 7 of the fish came on the baits. It was alot of fun. Oh one other thing. I had some fun with a hook in the shoulder! We pushed it through and snipped it off! Pucker factor was high!!!!!!! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks guys it was alot of fun to do something on a smaller scale. It is really neat for the basement guys to experiment and learn as we go. Last year before really getting into building the baits I had spent alot of time thinking what might work better than something on a shelf at the sporting goods store. Mostly for a specific situation or time of year. I started to realize that the big walleyes were very high in the water column. Like the top 3 feet. The second thing was a lure that wobbled with good action at a very low speed. Like less than 1.8 mph. Since I am learning and starting to see how much experience the long time lure builders must have. I have been learning thru trial and error. I found out that the lures with a bent back seem to fit the purpose with the slow wobble more than the straight backs. Amazing the suttle difference with the lips also. But most of all was the colors. The night bite it seems that the brighter colors worked the best. Yellows, whites and oranges. I know I can catch some musky's on them in the spring. I can't wait! The night bite. The night bite is very special thing that happens starting in October. I know of only a couple of places that this happens. I think they do it in the Greenbay area and out west in the Columbia river I think. Basically the whole shoreline of Lake Erie turns into a shorline type of bite. People can cast from the shore and do well but a small group of guys troll at night just outside the casters. I have been fishing downtown Cleveland. Yes right in front of the Rock-n-roll hall of fame and the Cleveland Browns stadium. This is only a couple hundred yards away. The big females come to feed heavy on the smelt and shad that come into the shore line. They are getting to feed the egg developement. The bite will continue well into ice-up. I have noticed that they are spitting up 4" shads in the livewell. I made a bait I can't wait to try when the weather settles down. I did a couple others to try also. I can't wait. There are guys that do run Charters at night. If anyone needs info just pm me and I can get some infor for you. I don't guide. I thought about it but it is one of my favorite things to do and it would take the fun out of it for me! LOL Steve. I didn't get a chance to go to any of the weigh ins on the FLW this year. I wish I did. They just annouced that they are not going to have the Championship here because of conflicts with the NFL and Major league baseball!!!!!!!! Bummer. They will do some other events they said earlier in the year. Two of my friends got to drive the camera boats for the events. I was fishing on Sunday 20 miles east of Cleveland and they came screaming by on their way to the fishing spots. Full throttle!!!!!!!! I am suprised they don't get whiplash. LOL It has been a great fall. We have boated 7 walleyes on my boat the last 3 weeks over 10 lbs. Two were over 11 pounds. I got this one last week that went 11.995 lbs in a little tournament we are fishing. The fish was only 29" long! Nuts!!!!!!!!! Not bragging or anything just sharing! The weather went into the dumpster. 12 to 15 foot waves right now! I hope we can get a couple more trips in before ice up. Again, having fun making baits and experimenting around is what it is all about. Even more fun sharing it with my luremaking family! Jed I like that one also. I haven't got one on it yet but when the water gets alittle colder I think it will work great. I think I have a closer pic of it. Grunt that was some fun pushing the hook the rest of the 3/8" thru!!!!!!!!!! I hurt more pulling it back out with the snipped mushroomed end on it!!! | Tigger, I second Beavs comments. You make some awesome looking stuff. I have tried to get a few of your creations on ebay, but it has gotten out of my budget. I would love to try some of those walleye baits in the allegheny river and at Erie at nite. (PA Erie) If you ever have some to sell, please email me/ Continued success in your lure making venture!! Plus, they taste great, so not many are inclined to put fish back, although anglers keeping smaller fish and releasing large ones is becoming more common. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Speaking of Zander. A good friend of mine from Sweden sent me these pics of big Zander caught the last week over there. I think 18 pounds and 24 pounds. I guess they catch them from shore this time of year. Man they sure like a walleye. Speaking of Swedish baits. He sent me a "Zico" bait. They are not made anymore. I caught a nice 10.7 pounder it last week on it. I broke the lip off it when it smacked into the side of the boat in big waves!!!!!!!!!!!  Dang unibody molded lip styles!!!!!!!
