Posts: 401 | Here is a short video I took with my hat camera this summer while fishing with my little guy. It was an average fish following one of my Krooks. The video is not the best. This was one of my first times using it and did not know how to run all the features with it. The quality of video got better by the end of they year. One thing about a hat camera it will tell you how you are paying attention. Lots of looks at the depth finder and the GPS during the day. Sorry about the baby talk. He was just short of two at the time. Edited by Professional Edge 12/6/2007 10:27 AM

Posts: 401 | I will post a picture. If there is some interest in hat cameras, I could call the guy that I got mine from and see if he will offer a group discount to this site. Keith Edited by Professional Edge 12/6/2007 11:48 AM

Posts: 85 | I was nervous to watch this in fear that it was going to be my "operator error" incident KT had on the camera from this season. That fish was hotter than noon asphalt in July, snout on a Krook going round and round.....one I'll still be replaying in my head come March. Best part is just you getting the little guy out....very cool Keith. Chris

Posts: 401 | I am not exactly sure what Steve is using. I decided to use my camcorder because it records at a better quality. It my understand that a DVR only has so much resolution. Here is mine. #1 is the complete setup outside the case. It looks like a mess but it is not hard to setup. Most of what you see is RCA cable. It all fits into a pack I bought for it. #2 is with it all in the pack plus it shows how I have it running to the back of my hat. #3 is my little guy showing how I wear it. I spin the pack to the side. I think I am going to get a DVR next year to try it. I am told you will get computer quality with a DVR not TV quality. I got mine from Quality Video Components. I spoke with Dennis. He said he would offer better pricing to us just mention you musky fish and saw it on this site. They had the best pricing that I could find. Posts: 32934 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I chose the Archos 504 as our main recording medium instead of a digital media, Mini DV, or other camcorder for several reasons: 1) The Archos is much smaller and more compact than most camcorders and fits in a shirt pocket, and will record with the double life battery and aftermarket double A rechargeable power source for up to 30 hours straight. 2) The 'record' and 'check record' function is on the Microphone cord attached to the hat camera so I can timebreak video segments one touch, numbering them in order on the Archos HD and turn the unit on and off from the switch on the Microphone. There are two indicator lights to indicate record function. If I have an 'event, as soon as I finish up with whatever has happened, I can simply press the button twice ending the record function on that clip and starting a new one. 3) The Archos will play the video back by timebreak segments, so I can review the video easily on the LCD Archos screen and select the exact clip I want to download easily. 4) The Archos microphone is incorporated into the helmet cam wire so I don't have that wire to deal with. Some are not, not sure about Keith's. 5) The DVR on the Archos uses a bitrate that is acceptable for use on the web. Keith is right, a camcorder records at a higher bitrate, but once encoded on any of the You Tube type websites for use on the web, you will not be able to tell the difference. We are contacting Archos Monday asking for a download so the unit can record at a higher bitrate for use elsewhere. If we want video at TV quality we use one of our production cameras, either the Canon or Panasonic, because of lens quality as much as bitrate. That also allows us to use our wireless microphones. 6) One wire from the camera to the DVR. Color Lipstick cameras do an OK job, but usually are in the 420 line area. You can buy a 404 new with a 30 gig hard drive and the necessary camera and dock and an aftermarket external power source for about $300.00 ready to rock. The 404 is the smaller unit in the picture, 504 the larger unit. The little black box holds 4 double A E-Cells, is totally rechargeable, and very compact. It plugs into the same dock as the camera, on the other end of the dock, and can either charge the battery or run the unit. The power pack is about $14 with rechargeable batteries included, but the E-Cells out last the batteries shipped with the unit by almost twice. The 504 with a 160 gig hard drive and necessary stuff will run you about $550.00 if you shop carefully. Both will double as a digital DVR for TV and Movies and almost unlimited music. There is now a new generation Archos series out, the 405 and up. Keith is running a similar system to what I used to use to record underwater video, with the video out from the camera and video in on the camcorder. Now with the 404, I can velcro the DVR to the back of the monitor on my Aqua Vu spool camera, so the entire equipment package is compact and protected. I'll have images up tomorrow night or Monday morning of the ice recording setup, and some video samples as well. We are just a few days away from launching our new video upload site for your use...watch for that. Attachments ---------------- ![]()

Posts: 401 | I really like the setup Steve has and I am going to get another one like it this winter. I like the time line break. With the camcorder I write down the time on a piece of paper for an event. I used the camcorder so I could record the Krook and use the video on a TV during show season is all. The camera I use a 520 color and it does have a additional mic that I put on the bag. So many options. Where did you get yours for that price Steve?
