Question for all who fish Canada for skis. Went to AML last year and filled out my Tax Refund form to get back my GST but was sent back rejected. I must have filled it out incorrectly but when talking to a few friends, theirs had been rejected as well. Is everybody having theirs rejected or is their a trick to this form?

Would appreciate any help on filling out the form from folks that have been successfull on getting their GST refund back from the Canadian Gov. If anybody has a copy of what they filled out, that would be great!

Appreciate any and all help on this matter.

thnx

Due to changes to the law that took effect on April 1, 2007, a goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) refund is no longer available on:

- personal goods purchased in Canada after March 31, 2007, by non-resident visitors who take the goods home; and

- short-term accommodation in Canada (including camping accommodation), unless the accommodation:
--- was part of a continuous accommodation at the same facility in Canada that started before April 1, 2007; or
--- was purchased under a written agreement entered into before September 25, 2006, under which the first night of continuous accommodation at the same facility in Canada is before April 1, 2009.

hmmm...
...trophy muskie fishing opportunities in the States are better than ever.
...the US/Canadian exchange rate is worse than ever.
...Canada no longer refunds the GST.

is this a recipe for less bookings at Canadian muskie lodges?

...and, you don't need a passport to fish from state to state in the USA. Just to get back in, I guess. m

Bergy, if your trip was billed as a package and not seperately itemized, you should still be able to get a refund. Taken individually, the GST on lodging, guide trips, food, etc. are non-refundable. But if it was a package deal, where you paid X dollars and guide services, boat rental, etc were included in that package, than it's considered a "tour package" and should be refundable provided that you booked before the cut off date listed above.

Still not even close to Canada.

You can stay in the States it's your loss.

The passport thing is a USA deal, we're just got no choice in the mater. We're actually trying to get a high security licence approved instead of passports.

no refund no big deal. just think. the obvious waters that have true trophy fish. refunds would not deter my choice. the new frontier seems to be green bay. in canada theres many places with monster fish.

I'm back next year to Dryden, no worries about the tax. I never bothered with it anyway.

Still not even close to Canada.
You can stay in the States it's your loss.

the fact is that more people every year are choosing to take their muskie vacations to the trophy fisheries in MN. there's only so much vacation time and vacation money available, and if it's going to MN it's doing so at the expense of other places, including destinations in NW Ontario since MN is "on the way" to NW Ontario anyway. the chance at numbers is good, the chance at a trophy fish is very real, and it's 7 hours closer to home? hmmmm...
on top of this, you add the confusion over what exactly are the border crossing rules and the added inconvenience from security crossing back into the States.
on top of that you add the current "poor" exchange rate compared to the easy money days of 10 years ago when there were US-favorable rates.
on top of that you add Canada keeping an amount of tax money that people are accustomed to getting back. "what? they're screwing me!" (you KNOW you've heard people complain in that way...and there's plenty of people who will hold on to that kind of thought for a long time.)

my comments are not meant as any kind of US vs Canada beef, or any kind of pissing contest about "who's got better fishing". rather, they're a political observation.
i'm sure that Canada has a number of good reasons for no longer refunding the GST, likely related to wanting to keep the tax money. however, people make bigger decisions every day for smaller reasons than those i listed above.
i'm simply suggesting that this might not be the best time for that kind of tourism promotion to be taken away, because it sure won't help people decide to cross the border, and it just might hurt. i'm guessing that at least one or two Canadian lodge owners or guides/outfitters (especially those who are muskie-focused) are complaining about it to their elected officials?

that being said, i'm heading back to Canada next year, my 5th time in the last 10 years...and that means one less week fishing in Minnesota.

Wow!!! Did not realize this would raise such a stink. lambeua summed it up very appropriately. Very well written lambeua! What it boils down to is this. It's not just the GST taxes, it's everything along with that - that adds up quickly. Coming from KC, the price of gas alone is tough to swallow. Don't know about some of you guys that commented that they can just eat $100 dollars here and $100 dollars there, my income does not allow me to be so frivilous. It probably will not sway me from going to Canada but it may not be as often when you add all the price increases together. With all of this being said - i would like to ask what i originally asked in my first post.......those of you who went to Canada last year.....did you get your GST back and if so.....would you plz provide me a pony copy of how you did your form to send back to the Canadian Govt. I really appreciate everyones time and comments on this matter!

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holidays!
