What do you think of this? I think it looks kind of cool. I usually put a release picture down in the corner, but I thought I would try this.

That is very cool. Did you do that with Photoshop? I have PhotoShop but have yet to get 5% out of it. The manual is huge!

A reminder:

To attach a file to be displayed in your post, first type in the text, then check the box under the text box that says 'attach a file after posting'. You need to us the 'reply' button instead of the reply box at the bottom of the thread so that option is displayed if you are not posting the first post of a new thread.

To resize an image, use any image resizing program and reduce the size of the image to 640X480 pixels or as close to that as is possible. That's perfect for this website.

That is pretty cool. Too bad that guy's head got in the photo though. Nice fish. I actually bought a new editing program this morning that can make photos look more like paintings. I spent some time today playing with it. Here is a photo I redid with it of a 42 inch fish my brother caught.

The fish head in the water spooks me out.

PhotoShop is a wonderful tool. It as an immensely huge program, too. I use it every day and I know I don't use 10% of it. It, and other editing programs, also allow for some editing that could perhaps wander into the unethical territory, but that's for another thread.

For you guys using PS, I think it was PhotoShop 6.0 that first featured the "History Brush" tool. If you're not acquainted with it, get there. It's unbelievable. It involves work though. It's not just a "click here for red eye reduction" or "auto" anything. This tool is all about you.

Essentially what it allows is for you to "do" something to the entire photo (brighness/contrast, enhance colors, sharpen, etc.), and then you can "paint" that change back only into selective parts of the photo of your chosing.

So the sequence goes, make an adjustment to the whole photo, undo that adjustment, paint that adjustment back into selective areas.

Really helps to bump up the contrast on a fish to bring it's stripes/spots/coloration, etc., out. You can also sharpen just you and the fish. Any of these changes really make you and your fish stand out from the background.

Get your "history" window in view, then select the history brush from your tool bar and start playing around with it. You'll thank me later. Photos always seem to wash out the colors and patterns on fish. PS is a great piece of software with option upon option available to bring that fish back to life the way it looked when you were holding her.

Its amazing how just a little editing can really change your perspective on a picture.

My sister recently send me this, titled, "cropping for internet dating"...I think the photos speak for themselves

and no thats not my sister!

Will- A cool effect, But, I think it detract's from the reallity of a fine catch. If the water image actually mimiced the size of the real catch OK, nice touch. However, from my perspective it's exaggeration of the fish. The miniture release photo in the corner sounds like a good idea. I have included a minuture of the lure in some of mine.

There are many who photo shop their photo's or use other photographic tricks to gain attention. f. ex. the guide who photo'd the same fish with two different anglers holding it and claimed it was again caught 30 minutes later. Because of the bandwidth/expertise of Internet users, these folks are typically caught red handed and have ultimately ruined there reputations/integrity with the rest of the site users.

Corey- ROFLMAO That's exactly what I'm talking about. Why go there if you are going to be caught misleading anyone? That would be a hilarious blind date encounter!

Hold the fish up & take a photo. Most folks can judge the size of the fish by how you're holding it. Want to claim it's 54.25" long, take a picture of it on the bump board.

Derrys- Same goes for altering the colorization of a photo, cool effect but it's not reality! Was that fish prettier before the effect was added?

Now, photo shopped photo's of Slamr are always a delight!

Have fun!

Al, how do users of the internet and their bandwidth play into photo analysis? I'd like to know more about that.

I think Derry's colorization was about artistic expression over reality. If you have to have everything "real", thats just your taste. I don't think theres anything wrong with messing with the images as long as it's not used as a means to deceive or be dishonest for some purpose. I liked the effect.

It's a plug-in program I use with Photoshop Elements 5. It's got 8 different choices of settings, but so far I've only been playing with the one that lets you make your photos look kind of like oil paintings. It actually costs more than Photoshop Elements, but I like it a lot. I have a coupon code that could save you $25.00 if you're interested in the program. You can also look it up on the internet. It's called LucisArts. Thanks.

PS. Here's what I did with the program on a shot I took at a minor league baseball game. The guy got nailed in the face with a line drive. He was ok. Here he's shaking hands with the guy who attended to his injuries. I think the effect looks pretty cool, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Dewd... Derrys... I like it. Simple and effectively enhances the atmosphere of the photograph. Let me know if you still have the coupon code. I'm a graphic designer, and this is a neat tool that I'd like to have on hand. Thanks!!!

Jono- If you consider the sheer numbers of user's crusing the Internet and the MF website, how many of those are skilled with using Photoshop or similar program's? How many are graphic designers, professional photographer's or even very skilled amatuer photographer's? I've been using a PC since the early 80's. But I don't even consider myself as a super user of software photography tools. That's what I mean by bandwidth.

If you consider the case of the guide trying to pass the same 50" fish as caught twice in a 30 minute period. He didn't photoshop the images. The second photo was darker and from a different angle, the camera f stop changed because the light level focal point changed, yet he got caught. How? I took the second photo & lightened it, and the cloud pattern's popped back out. Comparison of the cloud pattern's in both photo's showed the photo's had to be tacken within a couple of minutes of each other.

As for Derrys's photo, I agree it can be considered as artistic. But I was just wondering what the fish looked like before the effect was applied. I also agree that using these tools is fine, as long as they are not used to mislead the viewer. Both Will & Derrys said they enhanced their photo. Now it would be entirely different if they just posted the photo without comment.

ARH3001 is the coupon code for the LucisArt program.

Guest is right, the ski took a big dump, but luckily I was fishing in my brother's boat.
