My last two afternoon outings have resulted in long clicker rips (multiple) but no muskies. My graph shows the arc etc. Are these code reds more then just follow behinds and actually multi muskie misses? The bait shop is always out of large and XL so I have to go with 12'' suckers. I'm tempted taking scissors and trimming down the tail fin to slow there defensive movements or chocking the weight down only giving them 14'' of free swim.
Maybe the suckers have (STFP) Spontaneous tail fin propulsion?

If you saw what they saw, you'd be ripping line too...

Happens all the time. I don't think I'd mess with trimming fins. I want my suckers to act scared. Hopefully trigger a strike. However I've also seen (haven't we all) muskies follow a sucker for some time and then turn off. Ya can't make 'em eat.
Earlier this week I was on a lake that is now crystal clear. Saw two muskies laying on the bottom in 10 feet of water that wouldn't budge with a sucker almost knocking them in the head.

Boy isn't *that* the truth...

Several years ago when I lived near Spooner, I hooked up with Terry Margenau to help out with the early part of his research on the "quick-strike vs. single-hook" mortality work he did. They had captured about 20 muskies and put them in a small pond in the back of the Tommy Thompson hatchery in Spooner. The plan was to starve them for a few weeks, then go down with some suckers and catch some muskies--using either one of the two hook rigs. So every Thursday I had off, and would go and do some field work with Terry.

I remember going there three Thursdays in a row, after the fish hadn't eaten for 2-3 weeks, and floating suckers. We couldn't get those fish to eat a sucker for the life of us. We would pull the sucker to within an inch of the ski's mouth, and it would just back away. I realize this perhaps wasn't the same as being in the wild, but none of them had eaten for three weeks! You'd have thought ONE of them would've been hungry.

I remember that I wanted to cut the hooks off a Top Raider and rile them up a bit, but Terry would have none of it, lol. I thought I made a pretty convincing case, but he didn't buy it...

So close, yet so far away.

TB
