How have the Daiwa Luna's held up for you? Looking at replacing my 6500CL Big Game as this thing just has too many issues with the bail spring always going bad on me...How are the Luna's? Drags?
issues?

Anyone use the St Croix Avids...do they even still make those?

thanks

Love mine! After 1 ½ seasons it has been very reliable. Periodic lube and clean and it still functions like new. Smooth drag, comfortable handle, you won’t be disappointed!

FYI – The cleaning is more complex then most reels. You really have to break it down and be careful to get everything back in place. Seems like small parts want to fly all over!

No issues yet with my Luna, but I have only had it for half a season. This weekend and the second weekend of Nov. should test it a bit.

Brad, if your interested in the Avids I have two that I could sell. You may need to put new drag washers in them though. Let me know if you’re interested.

Great quality, very solid, very smooth. When tuned just right it will cast a loooong way. Have used it for one season, twice a week with no issues. Very satisfied with the drag. I will say it needs to be more acurately tuned for lure weight than abu's or you'll get back-lashes (for me anyway).

I dont run a luna myself but my friend Glen has been running two for three seasons now and loves them,no problums at all with a cleaning every season. As far as AVIDS go i think there great rods,i personally own four of them and find there all great 7-6mh,7-6h,8h,6-9h.Great rods.Yes st.croix has discontinued prodution of the avid line in favour of the legends due to reduced sales on avids since the introdution of the legend line, angler feedback and very close selling value.I still think they should have a mid line rod since the cost difference betwween premiers and legends is very substantial, but there stand on it was the costs of avids and legends are so close that the majority of anglers out there are just going to spend that small amount more and get the ART and IPC technology found in the legends.I dont fully agree there, but i am not a market anilist for st.croix either.Personally i think they should lower the price on the avids to a mid range somewhere betwwen the priemer and legend and i think some anglers may not be purchasing legends simply due to the cosmetics of the blue blank and chrome guides.I myself dont care how the rod looks as well as it performs and the legend deffinetly does,i own three legends as well and really like em but i have heard anglers tell me they have not puchased a legend due to cosmetics,HEY to each ther own.

Nice reel, Used mine probably close to 100 times or more this year with only minor issues. Using a walk the dog bait the anti reverse started acting up one day, and a different time the handle became hard to engage for a day. Both times though taking it apart and cleaning seemed to fix my problem.
Drag is tough....only reel I have that doesn't let line out while setting hook.
Yes they still make the Avid reels....... I'm about 97% sure that it is a Luna as of this year but its silver and $9 cheaper than the Luna.

The drag on this reel is GREAT !!!! Go to TackleTour.com They just did a comparison between the TE and the LUNA. The TE wins !!!!!!! But for the $$$$ the LUNA wins !!!!

I really like the two I have alot. However I must be just a bit unlucky. the instant anti reverse failed on both of these reels within the first three weeks of use. One of them was on a bucktail/topwater rod, and the other on a crank/twitchin' rod. I did not exert any more force on these than on any of my other reels, just started to act up. that said, the anit didn't completely go out, it just slips on occasion. One is a bit worse and I will get a back lash when it back reels on occasion, but the other is pretty good most of the time. I did talk to Diawa and they said to simply send them in, which I will do this week now that I switched reels for the fall. That said, I also have an old cvx, which I actually like much better than my Lunas. It is just as smooth, more rliable and was half the $$ up front. Not nearly as pretty as the Lunas though.

I agree with Reef Hawg.

They are great reels and will use them again in 2008, but for two things, topwaters and bucktails. I would not rip dawgs with them or the Anti Reverse will go out.

Hamernick and I both trashed brand new, straight out of the box reels in less than a weekend ripping mag dawgs. I will stick with my gander mountain reels for that with the TE handels on them. I know he has gone through a lot of them, like more than a dozen....

They definately are smooth reels, cast like a dream and the drags are pretty decent and their handles rock.

I just wouldn't use them for any sort of twitching or ripping dawgs.

I will echo what Mike and Jason said. I pop, rip, and slash a lot of baits especially cranks and after doing that for less than half a season the anti reverse started to go on me and I'd get the whole handle-spinning-backwards problem leading to a monster backlash. My less abused crank/glider/walk-the-dog topwater rod w/ Luna has the same issue, but is a bit more reliable simply because I haven't used it as much.

That said, I will probably continue using them.

Love mine! Actually, I have the St. Croix AC300, which is the exact same as the Luna 300. Runs super smooth, pulls even double cow girls with ease - you can throw them all day with no problem.

Awesome reel!

I had two new units to start the 07 season, both are in need of work. The anti reverse has gone out on both. Hulbert’s on to something when it comes to some of the bigger baits guys use. I completely blew out the anti reverse from just one week of fishing. Most of the baits I toss are rather heavy and have good drag. One of my reels still works well for bucktails or pacemakers, but its toast when I put on the mag dawg.

Besides that, I could not be happier with the reels. The cast fantastic are very smooth and constructed well. I still believe the reels are not made to use some of the monster lures guys throw these days. The gander reels work well and customer service is fantastic there.

Yep, the anti reverse can go out quickly when ripping as I had a few of them blown out in a day of working and ripping dawgs.

For ripping and twitching, the Gander Mountain reels with the TE handles on them are HARD to beat!!!

Elby,

I use the Gander Moutain GS66, they are silver and look exactally like a Pfluger Trion, as they are the same reel.

Put a TE handle on it from Thorne Bros and rip away. Great reels for $75.00

Also, if they go bad, take them back, and since it is a "Gander Mountain" product, they have a no questions asked return policy.

They are very very nice reels. That is what all my clients used this year.

I am on the Daiwa Advisory Pro Staff and will be bringing the anti-reverse issue to their attention. There were some reels that left the factory missing parts as well. Those were the reels that "blew" in a day.I have had 15 Lunas in rotation the last 2.5 years and have only had a couple glitches. It's kinda tough on a reel when someone gets a backlash that abruptly stops a 13 oz. bait going mach 10. Having been around the industry for a few years, there isn't a reel out there that is bulletproof.None. Most reels are not designed to withstand the abuse muskie fishermen/women put them through and the new trend toward bigger/heavier baits is proving that point. There are some guys up here throwing non-levelwind Shimano saltwater stuff now. And the race is on......... Steve

Well this weekend I had my first issue with the Luna. Knock on wood I haven’t had the problem of the anti-reverse going out.

On day two of the weekend the reel started the terrible screeching noise on the cast. Ouch, my ears! No problem I thought. The bearing attached to the spool needs lube as that is what has fixed other reels in the past. Much to my disappointment that didn’t work. I let the reel rest till the next day, and the same thing until it warmed up into the afternoon.

Steve, any suggestions on what I can do to fix it? I’d rather not send it in yet as I really need that reel for the second weekend of Nov.

Oh ya, the whole anti-reverse deal. I agree with Steve that no reel is bullet proof. I haven’t found a reel yet that the anti-reverse hasn’t gone out at some point. Some it only took a couple of weeks, others a year or two. So far so good with the Luna. The Luna is my big bait/heavy bait reel and takes the most abuse out of any of the reels I have. Other than the screeching it has been great.

Anti-Reverse went. Love rippin' 10 inch Jakes.

Use Gander 66's now....store is 1 mile away. They will blow too, but then I can just exchange for a new one when they do go.

Best Luck

Travis,
I had that issue and unfortunatly a dunk in the drink didn't get it done. The pawl and levelwind need some lube. That should do it. Steve

Travis just screw off the side and lube the gears, that took care of the noise in my case

hm, I already did the lube of the bearings inside the side cover. I also already lubed the worm gear. I may just have to do a complete tear down to see if there is something I am missing.

Good luck, sounds like a complete tear down is in order. Did that with my AC 300 after three years, but the Lunas are still going strong with just minor lube after two years

Lube the bushing or bearings on each end of the worm gear, that's where the screeching is coming from.....seen..and heard it many times!
