Please post here.. Give us a complete description of your tournament/guiding 'outfit'. Boat, Motors, Sonars, Net, Rods, Reels,Line, and Lures favored. After the short description of each catagory, give a reason why you like using that particular gear. Attach a picture of your rig, if you have one. This will be a very valuable resource for the angler just getting started in the sport, and the 30 year veteran, alike. MuskieFIRST visitors: In a few days when the Pro/Guide outfit posts are nearly complete, I will start a thread for descriptions of your personal 'oufit' as well. Lets see if we can make this thread the difinitive definition of 'Muskie Gear'!![]

I run an 1890 Warrior Eagle. Powered by a 125 Merc. tiller. I also have a 9.9 4-stroke kicker. I run a Pinpoint Trolling motor. I have two 7520 Pinpoint Sonar units, that are hooked together with the Insync Pinpoint system. I can read depths at the front and rear of the boat on split screens on either unit. I have a Raytheon Chart Plotter map system and GPS. My marine radio is a Raytheon. I have a set of Wave Wackers on the rear for backtrolling and keeping the boat under control when the wind blows. I have six rod holders on the boat positioned for rod placement under all conditions. I have a 30 lb. navy anchor for the ultimate boat control and for safety reasons if I have motor trouble. I also have a Wave Tamer drift bag for controlled drifts when desired. I use Lamiglas rods and have an assortment of reels so clients can experience different brands. Calcutta's, Diawa Millionaires, Morrums, and Quantums and most sized Garcias. I use Lakewood boxes and a wide variety of baits too long to mention. I work at thorne Bros and have just about every bait that has hit the market. Some favorites are Reef Hawgs, Phantoms, Suicks, and a few Hughes Rivers and Mantas. Cranks: Jakes, Grandma's, Depthraiders, Slammers, and Believers. Topwaters, Musky Busters, Slammers, and Topraiders and favorite topwater, a 10 inch jointed Believer. Bucktails: Eagle Tails, Huntertails, Lilytails, Musky Candy, Mepps, Harassers. Spinnerbaits: Fudally's, CJ's, Marv's, Northland, and Mike Ruffs. If I could only have one bait it would be a 10 inch jointed Believer because I could cover most of the water column and even troll if I had to. Good luck,Murph!

Ok here goes, hope I don't forget something important. 1. Boat and Motor: Ranger 519 Comanche, 225 Merc Optimax. The boat is a great fishing platform with more underdeck storage than can be imagined. Deeper V than most "Bass Boats" this boat is great for big water but does not troll. Which probably explains why I don't do that anymore. No baitwell on this boat but has livewells so your minnows could be kept in them, but I don't live bait at all so it's a moot point. Very fast of course with the 225. This motor starts great and gets darn good fuel economy as well. 2. Troller and Electronics: Minnkota 74 pound Maxuum 48" shaft. Great for the high wind and waves, also in the raised position goes through the weeds great. Lowrance, global map 2000 on the dash, good finder and GPS unit, chip reader and all included. Also zercom flasher on dash with temp. Lowrance X85 on bow along with a Lowrance flasher and temp. gauge. Sometimes it pays to have backup systems for needed items. 3. Other Electronics: Marine band radio on board, 3 bank charger on board, am fm cassette stereo for the football games in the fall. 4. Rods and Reels: Too numerous to list all, will give an overview. Large Bucktails, Loomis 7'7" Med to Hvy, use this for large tandems as well. Calcutta 251 reel. Jerk Bait, 6'6" Falcon Hvy, Calcutta 251 both spooled with 50# to 80# Tuff line. Topwater & Cranks 7" St Croix Med to Hvy, Calcutta 251s 65# Power Pro. Jigs and Creatures 7 to 7.5' Loomis IMX with Shimano Citicas & Curados, 65# Power Pro. 5. Gear carried: Spare trolling motor prop, nut & washer, trolling motor shear pins (many) Jumper cables, Tool box, 1st aid kit, Extra life jacket, mini bolt cutters, extra needle nose pliers, side cutters. Well you get the picture. 6. Lures: Mostly hand tied Bucktails. Favorite Glider: Jerko. Favorite Jerk Bait: Reef Hawg, Topwater: Giant Jackpot. Crankbait: Bucher Depth Raider. Tandem: Ace Baits Big Tandem. Jigs: Porky Jig by Odeysey Lures. 7. Tow Vehicle, 1999 Chevy Z71 Ext. Cab I guess thats about it, but then this must be enough "stuff".......................nope, no such thing as too much "stuff" Let Em Go...Let Em Grow.....Mike

Too many baits to mention, favorites are Bull Dawg magnum of course, 10" Jake, Reef Hawg, Weighted Suick, Magic Maker, Doc, Shallow Invader (great twitch bait), can't pick a favorite bucktail but these new Shady Tails sure look nice! OK, here goes; As far as my rig, my tow vehicle is a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Extended cab 4x4 with the Duramax diesel package. My boat is a 2000 ProCraft SuperPro 190 (19', 93.5" beam) single console boat with: 2000 Mercury 175 hp EFI mounted on a 10" Setback Bob's Machine Shop hydraulic jackplate. PinPoint 3700 Trolling Motor with (2) PinPoint 7520 locators networked. My clients and I fish with custom built "Steve Huber Signature Series" rods, primarily built on St. Croix blanks, using Shimano and Ambassaduer reels, spooled with PowerPro line. The lures used are wide and varied, but I've found that when tossing spinnerbaits, I (and the fish) like Secret Weapon spinnerbaits. But others used are Jakes, Cranes, Undertakers, Bucher's lures and several others. As far as why I use what I use? I drive the Chevy diesel because I tow a LOT of miles every year and this is the most economical truck that I've found best suited for my purposes. I chose ProCraft because I wanted a low profile boat that fishes great! It does this and more. It has tons of underdeck storage, is stable, handles great, looks good and offers a lot of boat for the buck. A Mercury outboard is hanging on the back because of Mercury's reputation for reliability, dependability and the their large, nationwide service network. Just about everywhere you go, there's a Mercury shop. I went to PinPoint trolling motor/electronics because I got tired of replacing my Motorguides at the end of each season. I was tickled to death with MinnKota but liked the "No-Brainer" boat control of PinPoint. The locators are on because of the size of the display, the detail shown, the fact that I don't have to cobble a transducer on the trolling motor and they just plain work great. I've gone to 99% custom rods over the last couple of years because I wasn't totally pleased with the quality of the rods that I was getting for the money spent. This is not a slam against any rod manufacturer, it's just that I can put a lot more time and attention to detail in building a rod that no mass producer can match. I can also build the rod to EXACTLY what I want, as far as action, handle/grip style, length, eye placement, etc. I use Shimano and Ambassaduer reels because they hold up to the abuse that clients and I give during a season. Quantum and others just don't seem to hold up for me, I've tried but that's the fact. I know that there's a lot of good lures out there, but as long as I can keep putting fish in the boat (144 muskies last seaon), I see no need for change there either. Unless there's some lure builders out there that want to send me samples to field test! So, that's what and why I use what I use. These are only my opinions and findings, your milage may vary. After reading Larry's Post I can see already my wife needs to buy more gear..[] [] 1. Boat; Tuffy Esox Magnum, 60hp Merc Tiller, Minn-Kota Auto Pilot, Minn-Kota Transom Mount. Little things in the boat like floating markers, first aid kit, spare prop and prop nut, spot light, spare key for the motor, spare trolling motor prop and nut and spare fuses. 2. Sonar; Garmin 240 and Eagle Ultra Classic on the bow. 3. Rods; I have St. Croix's, Fig Rigs, Cortlands and a few custom units. 4. Reels; I use primarily Garcia, still think their the best value for the dollar. I have several 5600-c4's and several 6500's and just purchased four of the new c5's. I also have some Penn-10 trolling reels I use for trolling and sucker rods. 5. Tackle boxes; I have one of the Lakewoods Magnum Musky's, on of the medium sized Lakewoods and two of the Plano soft siders with the individual boxes. 6. Rain Gear; Currently I am using a Columbia Jacket and a set of gortex pants that I use for duck hunting. Kind of crude but they work. 7. Optics; I use Ocean Waves St. Croix models in "Green Mirror". Also have several pair of less expensive models in various colors. Good Optics are worth their weight in gold...! 8. Line; I use primarily Cortland Spectron, I have several reels spooled with Tuff-Line. Tolling lines are mono, I don't have a brand preference here. 9. Release Tools; I use Frabill Nets, my personal favorite is the Kwik-Kradle, I also have a "Big Game" hoop style. Great nets for the fish and very user friendly for the angler. I have two pairs of the following at all times, knipex cutters, long handle needle nose pliers, large and small jaw spreaders, and "hook outs". 10. Misc; Other items include hook files, replacement hooks, split rings, and other misc. tackle items. Don't forget the venison sticks, small block of cheese, Crackers and a 12 pack of Coca-Cola's...[] Most of all have fun.. Mark Musky Adventures Eau Claire, WI www.muskyadventures.com

Hi all! I am running a 2001 Ranger 681VS with a 135hp Mercury on the back. Went away from a bass boat style to have the trolling option this season. It's now rigged with six rod holders and for electronics I am running all Lowrance products. I run an X-15 with GPS mapping on the console, and an X-85 on the bow. Lowrance products for me have always been dependable and easy to use! I have a Minn Kota Maxxum trolling motor (simply a workhorse!) 74lb thrust with a 52" shaft. Nets- Frabill Big Kahuna and Power Catch Big Game Series. Superb quality and craftsmanship! The Big Kahuna is great on trophy water and the Big Game net is great for the numbers lakes and tournaments because its a little easier to handle. Rods- All St. Croix products. Mainly the Avid Series, love the 7' and 7'6" models. Do run a couple of Premiers though. Great rod, USA made here in WI, and great people to deal with. Lures/terminal tackle(leaders & split rings)- Bucher products of course, but also creepers, plastics, slip sliders, reef hawgs, suicks, etc. Good luck to all this season! Tom Dietz

My boat is a 19 foot Angler 190C; it’s a centre console off-shore boat built on a stepped catamaran tunnel hull. Super roomy, very deep, and can handle big water. Currently have a Merc Optimax Saltwater 150 on the back end, but will be looking at a couple of other potential options next spring when Yamaha and Honda release their 175 4-strokes. This boat has 54” and 68” livewells, plus a huge baitwell that is bigger than the livewell in many bass boats. The boat is also rigged with a pair of quartz-halogen off road lights, and a 1m candlepower hand-held flood for night fishing. Currently in the process of adding a 101 pound thrust Minn Kota Maxxum (62” shaft). Twin Bottomline Tournament Master HR’s… one on the console and one on the bow. Also have an Osprey trolling speedometer. A pair of Cannon Unitroll HP depthfinders, 6 Scotty Striker rodholders, a Cannon planer mast and a pair of twin oak planer boards. I use a Beckman Magnum Fin-Saver Pen net, but also carry a Lunge Locker stainless steel release gaff, and a 30 pound BogaGrip. Lots of release tools: Stanley locking pliers, and Knipex cutters… plus my trusty kevlar gloves. My trolling reels are a mix of Penn 310 and 320 GTI’s, although I am seriously looking at replacing all of these with Penn International 975’s before opening day. I have a mix of trolling equipment: 4 med-heavy rods with 100 pound TUF XP hi viz, and 4 heavy trolling rods with the same line. I am currently negotiating to upgrade my trolling rods to St. Croix’s. My casting outfits are a mix of 7’ and 7’6” rods, outfitted with either Abu Garcia 6500’s and 7000’s loaded with Cortland Musky Master 36 pound dacron line. Four plano boxes: #1 – all spoons (Gibbs and Eppinger); #2 – bucktails and spinnerbaits (mostly customs); #3 – assorted crankbaits and jerkbaits (Ernies, Cisco Kids, Shad Raps, Sledges, Big M’s, and Muskie Stalkers); #4 – 10” Believers in assorted colours. PLUS we have a tube box full of 10” Jakes, and a smaller box full of my saltwater specials. Camera gear includes a pair of Canon T90’s with an assortment of lenses, and a Canon WP-1 foul weather camera. Steve Wickens STRIKE ZONE Muskie Charters

First, let me say that almost ALL of my fishing gear choices are price driven. I take some pride in having gear that will do the job while not spending the top dollar unless I have to. Because of this, I tend to stay with what I know works for me till I find a better value. Having said that, here's my equipment: BOAT: 1760 Tuffy Renegade/Tiller. This has been a great boat for me. Plenty of space to handle three people, both for gear storage and room to fish. It rides the water well and is a much drier ride than my last boat, a Lund Pro Angler. TRAILER: Shorelander 2400# galvanized/roller. I have always loved Shorelander's trailers. I only buy galvanized because in running till ice up in Northern Wisconsin one fall of road salt will eat any trailer's paint job. They aren't pretty, but I hate painting trailers. I only buy roller trailers because some of the lakes I fish have very shallow or undeveloped landings and without a roller trailer you can not launch a boat. MOTOR: Evenrude/70hp/4stroke/tiller. My last engine was a 4stroke Honda, I thought that would be a tough motor to beat, but I think this Evenrude has done it. It is quieter than the Honda and the fuel economy is just as good even though I'm pushing more boat with more horsepower. I only use a tiller style motor because I do a fair amount of structure trolling and you can't beat a tiller for that. The 70 is the perfect blend for me - it pushes my boat fine (top rating 75hp) and it trolls down great! ELECTRONICS: I run two (one in front, one back) Raytheon L365's Both have speed and temp (a must) and for the money ($210) they are the best units I have found, you can buy and own better (and I have), but these units do everything I need for much less money. Only problem I have had with them is the temp. function has gone out on one of them and had to be fixed. TROLLING MOTORS: On the front I run a Minnkota Auto Pilot 24 volt/65# thrust. On the back, Minnkota Maxxum 24 volt/ 65# thrust. Both have been great motors, wouldn't change a thing. REELS: For casting I still really on Ambassadeur 6500's, certainly better reels out there, but for the money they are hard to beat. I lost faith in them a few years back when they changed their drag/washer setup, but sense they have gone back to their older style I have become a user again. I insist on a reel that has a drag that will tighten down the spool to a near complete stop. They cast OK for smoothness and distance. For trolling I like Penn 209's. They are a workhorse and for $45 where are you going to find a better trolling reel for the money? In all the years of using them I only remember two problems. I once had a guy stip out a main pinion gear and I have had to replace a few drag washers. They also make a great live bait reel. RODS: I use quite an assortment of rods. Mainly because I know what I like in a rod and will shop for a deal. Often, I buy low price rods that have good blanks or eyes and combine the two to make one rod. You invest a little time, but you end up with a good stick for half the money of buying off the shelf. It gives me something to do to keep me out of trouble in the winter months! If I buy off the shelf it is usually St. Croix. NET: Beckman, need I say more. The only thing I make sure of is that I run the deepest bag they have (helps to keep those fish down in the water) and I double bag my net. ROD HOLDERS: Scotty's. Have used them for years without a failure. TROLLING BOARDS: Church Tackle Walleye Boards. They are the best for in-line boards in my book. I do make one major modification that helps a lot (I would tell you but then I'd have to kill ya!), actually, it is the addition of another release per board. BAITS: WOW, where to start. I guess I will just list what is in the water the most starting at the surface and working down: Top Raider, LeLure Creeper, Hawg Wobbler, Boo Tails, my own tails, A&L spinnerbaits, Gapen Weed Cutter, Northland Bionic spinnerbait, Windel's Muskie Snacks, Wade's Wobbler, Reef Hawg, Suicks (as of late), Jake's, Grandma's, Depth Raiders, Ernie's, Mirr-O-Lure's, Cisco Kids (regular & deep lips). Many more, but those are the go-to baits. LINE: 50# Power Pro for trolling and 65# for casting/rigging. 80# for live bait. That's a long enough list for now. [:knockout:]
