Posts: 2060 Location: Appleton,WI | Lets say you were to set up production painting for a lure company.(Say 300 baits a year) and you were payed 2.50 a lure. What would your cost be to set up.Building drying rack, inventory of paints, air brush or brushes compressor ..ect..ect..??? How long do you think it would take to make money back on your investments? Edited by MuskieE 10/1/2007 5:39 PM

Posts: 1530 | look at long term. a blower for fumes,, paints and clears. buy by the gallon will save big. compresser go with an oil sump belt drive. production painting we use paashe h pattern brushes.. the killer is heating cost if you are in a northern area. electric is safest dure to solvents. we have been doing customs and production for companies for 2o years. its an adventure. start up with 5 million and quit when your down to 2 million. then you would still be a millionaire

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I dont use solvents, all water based Createx paints and Envirotec top coats. Well insulated shop heats with one small oil(elecric) radiator. Works great and keeps cost way down. Could use wood heat if I had to. Paint booth of my own design 100 bucks. 8 inch duct fan with 21 by 16 filters to collect the solids. Use three Roticery motors for turning Epoxy. No problem. I am building a bigger tumbler from scratch of my own design. 300 lures per year is not production. 3,000 lures per year is production. I get way more than 2.50 per lure to paint. I have more money into the machines that make the baits than my painting stuff. A guy could start a paint shop for under 500 bucks. Pasche compressor and gun 150.00 the rest in your basement 300 bucks, 50 bucks for an assortment of paints and a quart of epoxy and you are doing it. I started painting spoons for the Salmon industry. No money there as spoons only sell for about 4 bucks each. I have a single action Pasche air brush with three tips. Lots of stencils and the racks to hold all of my lures, all built by me for pennies. I dont paint plastic lures or metal anymore. I just refinished two Weagles that were beat from many fish . They are brand new again. So far my company has grossed over $35,000.00 in 2007. Kingfisher Edited by Kingfisher 10/11/2007 9:24 PM

| Kingfisher, Sounds like you are doing very well if you have a decent margin. Have you ever figured out how much you make per hour after your expenses. that would be intersting. | |||

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I work 8 to 10 hours a day. I dont leave home much except to go fishing. My company also sells puppies so its not all lures. 12,000.00 of that money was Bichon Puppies. But still 22,23 thousand in three quarters is not too bad. The trick is to keep busy .I always have 24 to 36 Lures in Process. I hope to get ahead of the game this winter. I have been three weeks behind all year. Having blanks ready to paint is key. That is what Ill be doing all winter, building blanks. I used to make 12.00 an hour and worked 40 hours per week. That came out to around $24,000.00 per year. I was at $28,000.00 at the end of the second quarter. I cant really get an hourly average as I work really weird hours and the dogs you know ? they do the work there ha ha ha . I guess Im making a pretty good profit but taxes eat up a pretty good chunk as do components. Ill probably clear about 32 thousand by the end of this year. So I am not getting rich but I am my own boss and the company owes nothing to the bank. I need a bigger building and we are working on that. Talonz is growing fast though and we are really getting some attention from the likes of Esox Angler and Michigans Woods and waters magazines. Esox Angler mentioned our Planer boards in a recent issue. That led to several sales. We are now in Pastikas (Wisconsin) Lakeside Tackle(St Clair Shores Michigan) Protacklemuskyshop.com (Canada) and are getting a new Canadian shop in Montreal owned by Joe McComber. Most of my big bait sales go to Canada. It doesnt hurt when you got guys whackin 40 lbers on your baits . My 12 inch Deepthreats on just one guides boat have already put 38,39 and 40 pounders in his boat. He will be featured at my website this winter. He is one of the best in the world and wants me to hold off on putting his picture out. The guy really has the hogs where he lives. We lost a real big Michigan fish on the 12 inch Deepthreat last week. Blew the anti reverse on a big Okuma Convector on the strike. I was pi$$#@ off to say the least. It could have been a 40 pounder. Big fish sell lures like no other thing. As of last year our clients have been whacking some real big Muskies all over the country and Canada. That is why we are doing well in sales. Kingfisher
