Lots of variables there Todd. What size jake? There a 4 sizes. What kind of line? braid runs much deeper than mono. How fast does he troll? Speed plays a big part also. Once all these factors are established depth is controlled by the amount of line let out.

A 10" jake with 80# braid at 4mph will run 4' deep @20' back. Drop it back 160' and you're down 20'. Those #'s are for a properly tuned lure. One that runs to the side, even slightly, won't get as deep. There's a book out called Musky Mikes Trolling Secrets that gives the dive curves for popular lures. Your friend might want to pick up a copy.

I tried to buy a copy a couple of months ago and apparently they're all gone.

Ok I'll let the cat out of the bag. Due to work and family I decided to put the book up for sale. The rights to the 2nd Edition were purchased by a well know lure manufacturer and the plan is to have the 2nd Edition available in November.

Thanks, Mike

As far a 10" go I have a few older (not sure but pre 2000) that troll a lot deeper than the new ones.

I'm with Justin on this one. seems the squared off lip might have had something to do with it, not sure. Maybe the more clunky rattles had more weight. My old 10"ers ran about like my newer 8"ers. Good observation.

The big 13" with 132 feet line out will go to 18 foot. What size are you using?

BTW I have 8 of those musky mike books. I was planning on donating them to clubs early next year instead of selling them. I think they still have the CD for sale too on the website.

Must have info! I actually like my CD better. I just print off the few pages I need and had them laminated.
