I am going to place an order with Moore’s Lures and can’t decide weather or not to buy their split rings. I have always used Bucher split rings and have been very happy with the #5 and #7 rings. Looking at Moore’s catalog they have there own line of rings in fine, standard, and heavy. The heavy seem comparable to Bucher’s but only come in nickel plated.

Two questions; Are the Moore’s rings as strong as Bucher rings? And, Will the Moore’s rings fit through a 0.72” dia. screw eye with room to move? I would ask Dick Moore himself but he is out until the end of the month.

This may seem trivial but I do not have a local source within an hours drive. If I buy from another source I will get stuck with freight for more than the rings cost.

Thanks in advance,

Bruce

I also use Bucher's and I also use .72 screweyes on some of my baits.

I've tried other brands. I tried Rollie and Helen's brand and was somewhat disappointed. They are just OK. They're not as strong as Bucher's and they're not finished with the same quality finish as Bucher's.

If you can, I'd stick to Bucher's if you can find them.

Thanks guys. I think I am going to hold out for the Bucher rings. I meant to type .072 dia eye screw. I prefer the dark ones over silver.

Bucher rings are made buy Worth for Bucher and are no longer made with the dull green finish (to toxic to make that way), they are nickle plated. Moore's are probably Worth you would have to ask. I buy from Worth at least 1,000 at a time.

Ron,

I do believe Dick is in Canada for a bit. Try calling this week, he's easier to reach that way.

As for the split rings, I bought a bunch to make bucktails with and they seem to hold up well. I've done a bunch of pulling, opening and re-opening and none of them remain "slightly open" that you'd find happen on a worn ring. That said I bought the heavy duty rings just in case.

That makes since. I work in the automotive industry and there has been an EPA driven initiative to reduce or eliminate mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromeium for the last few years. A lot of companies are being forced to find alternative coatings for metal and fasteners to comply.

I guess we should all start buying the silver ones to save Mother Earth. I wonder if the same goes for hooks.

Moores lures #7 are strong. I use them on my lures and have not had one fail on a fish yet. Every once in a while I will get one that stays open. Just chuck it and grab another.

A bit of info. Virtually all the split rings used in the fishing tackle industry come from Worth., other than Wolverines. If you buy from us, Stamina or any other suppliers , we all buy from Worth. Check the pull test to get the heaviest ones. Also Stainless Steel rings are NOT the strongest.

That's 'waste', and I disagree. Wolverines are extremely reliable.

the hook will turn out first, instead of the splitring (by experience).so like i said wolverine is a waste of money, and useless to to the max.chubbies have a lots of 40 lbs+ under the belt and if the moore's splitring resist to that im quiet.

Who said the Moores was not a good split ring? No one, I don't think. I just believe the Wolverines are VERY reliable. I use them, have caught a few 40# class myself, and have never had a failure. Never had a hook bend out and fail, either.

I like Wolverines also, have been using them forever. I guess its what your comfortable with, because those mentioned are all good split rings.

IMO I think the industry has gone over the top on this super-heavy tackle---.062 wire, triple rings, 7/0 hooks....we catching fish, not volkswagons...well the manufacurers are catching fisherman anyway...

Here's another Option Owner Hyperwire SS Split rings. They aren't cheap but I like using them because unlike the cheap nickle plated Worth rings when you open them up over thick 4X hooks The Hyper Wire rings will recoil back shut unlike the Worth nickle plated Rings. I want to use the Smallest Split ring I can

Wow I didn’t expect this much activity on this thread.

I did buy Moore's (AKA worth) #5 and #7 rings. They seem to be top quality and comparable the Bucher rings I am accustomed to. The key for me is that they fit through the screw eye and hook and snap closed tightly. They also need to swing freely. I really like Wolverine rings too but they can be too wide to fit through some screw eyes.

I have to give a plug for Dick Moore. I have always been happy with his service and quick delivry.
