Hi all,

I have a couple baits I want to redo, and I'm looking for some paint that will shift color with the light angle. I know I've seen this stuff before (there was a 'hoopety' car around town that shifted from an olive green to a purple), but I have no idea where to start. The hobby stores in town have been useless. Also, can these be had in spray-cans? I don't have an airbrush. And will it be Etec safe?

Thanks,

Eric

Ive used it a few times to paint up some baits for friends. The best stuff I have been able to find has been the House of Kolor Chameleon. Its not cheap(around $33/oz) but it goes a pretty long way. The only problem is that you have to paint it over black in order to get the best effect. Ive tried going over white and a few other colors and it just doesn't work too well so it kinda limits the patterns you can use unless you just want to paint the entire bait a solid color. I'm pretty sure that you can buy it in a spray kit but I wouldn't know where to tell ya to start looking. My old boss bought a few of the kits to paint the tank on his motorcycle and it turned out pretty well. Ill try to get ahold of him to see which brand he used, but in the meantime, here is a link to a site that seems to have a pretty decent selection:

Good luck and let us know how the baits turn out. As far as E-tex goes, I haven't had any trouble using the HOK paints but you should probably check with the manufacturer of whichever brand you go with to ensure that you don't toast your paint job. Hope that helps a bit.

Thanks, Lazer. I had heard that it needed to go over black, so I was thinking of using stencils/tape to lay down the black base coat, then hitting it with the chameleon. We'll see; if it costs that much, I may forget it.

Ditto on the House of Kolor.
You can get it in ready to spray 2 ounce bottles, but 2 ounces will go a long way, and the coverage is very good.
Over black is good, but don't be afraid of gray or platinum or any other colors. The make a sapphire kameleon that I spray over pearl after giving it a platinum or gray scale pattern, and it gives an awesome finish.

If you can find a Hobby Haven, or a shop that has RC cars. They have paint that goes on the inside of the model car bodies. I've bought it in small puff cans. Your'e better off putting thin coats, and alot of them, on. Doug

I found the color changing paint at Wal-Mart in the automotive section. Also at your local car parts store....Auto Zone or Advance Auto.

Createx Auto Air also has color shifting paints that sell for around $25 for a 4 oz bottle. Water based so easy clean up. I've never used the color shift paints but have ben very happy with their other paints.

Heres a link to the auto air page at dixie art.
