Is there some point at which you stop throwing bucktails in the fall b/c they move too fast for cold, lethargic fish?

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Never stop tossing tails. Just go to slow rolling big blades. I do go from bucktails to spinnerbaits when it gets into the 50's.

I don't understand the theory behind so many thinking baits have to be moving slow in the fall? fish will chase fast moving baits with water temps down into the 30's. As always, let the fish tell you what they want and how fast they want it...not someone on an internet message board. my 2 cents.

Posts: 1243 Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | I'm with bn...trolling at 4+ mph works right up until ice up. So there's no reason to think that casting bucktails is too fast of a presentation. If they want it, they'll chase it down. Aaron Edited by AWH 9/19/2007 6:39 PM

Posts: 2361 | I think the effectiveness of bucktails drops in lower water temps, and becomes dependent on fish activity level. as do the search type topwater baits. It's not that they won't work, it is more that they are not always best choice.

Posts: 8831 | Cold water = slower metabolism = fish feed less often + move more slowly Where are the big fish late in the fall? Where are they feeding? What are they feeding on? What does all of that tell you?

Slow them down and they catch fish year round, and if that doesn't work speed them up Just like topwater use them ice out until ice up

If you bring 3 lakewoods, I'm guessing you have to use at least a whole bunch everyday. Topwaters, bucktails, whatever!

what I meant was.. fish can and do move on fast moving baits in the fall...and slow moving baits in the fall...watch a sucker swimming around...do the muskies usually eat them when they are moving slow or trying to get away? saying that they only will eat slow moving baits / bucktails whatever in the fall is false... take it or leave it...makes no difference to me! ![]() as you say SWorrall...there are no rules...

Posts: 3242 Location: Racine, Wi | I'm thinking that depending on the depth of the fish, that would determine if I can fish hair or not. If I'm targeting fish that are on deeper breaks, realating to deeper water, it's tough to get hair down that deep (not including spinnerbaits). If the fish are shallower, throw hair. They'll eat it for sure.

I think tuffy 1 is right. The reason you have to slow down with tails in the colder weather is to get your bait down to the area of the water column that the fish are using. They aren't as high in the water column in cold water and are less willing to rise to chase.
