What it the best way to hook up an onboard charger. I have a two bank charger, and a 24 volt system + starting battery.

I'm not worried about the starting battery, but I would like to know what to do with my 24 volt system.

Do I hook one lead to each of the batteries in the 24 volt system, or do I only need one lead for both batteries?

Thanks for your help,
Scott

Also, do you put a piece of wood behind the charger, if you can only install it over carpet.

There should be two sets of leads on a two bank charger. On mine, I just connect one set to each battery. Pretty straightforward there.

As far as mounting, how exactly you mount it might depend on your charger. My "Guest" charger has jack squat for heat sinks, so it needs space behind it for airflow for cooling. If your charger has good heatsinks, you should be able to mount it to anything that will hold a screw. If not, you might want to use 2 pieces of wood to space it out 1/2" from the surface behind it (to allow air to flow freely behind it), whatever it may be. If you just put a big single piece of wood behind it, you could still have cooling problems. I like the idea of space.

I hope this helps.

So it doesn't matter that it is a 24 volt system? The charger knows how to break that link to charge the batteries.

Thanks,
Scott

To the best of my knowledge, it shouldn't matter. My 24v Pinpoint has the cord plug-in wired so that it pulls 24v from the front outlet, which hooks up to both batteries, and through jumpers or whatever has certain prongs @ 24v. Apparently some sort of marine standard or something.

I'd defer to the owners manual of your charger for a definite answer if your batteries are in fact hard wired to each other to create the 24v. IF they each run sep to your plug-in, you are free to just hook them up.

I wish this question was answered in my owner's manual. It is about a page and a half, and doesn't mention 24 volt systems at all. (The box says it is good for 12 and 24 volt systems)

It's a Guest if that helps.

Scott:

It all depends, if your boat is not pre-wired for 24 volts, then you would have to wire your batteries in seriec for 24 volts, this sound like what you have done. In this case I would undo the wire connecting the 2 batteries when charging them. If your boat is wired for 24 volts there should be no connection between the batteries and just wire the charger direct.

Good luck
