Went out yesterday and my maxxum had steering problems. It will only rotate 180 degrees now. It is like there is something physically stopping it from turning.

The real confusing part is that sometimes I can go from the 6 o'clock position to the 12 o'clock position, then for no reason at all I can go from the 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock position. It rotates where it allows me to turn.

I looked in the pedal and head for an obstructuion. The gears and cable in the head of the motor look fine. The cable tension is tight (I even tried backing it off and tightening it down). The clamp holding the outer shaft is tight. I am at a loss.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, if I have to get a new trolling motor, I may be done for the year. Money is tight!

call MinnKota Service toll free number and explain the problem to them.
They should be able to help.

If not, I'd call one of their repair shops.

From my limited experience with MinnKota (Johnson Outdoors), I've found they are more than willing to help customers.

Someone should be able to help without charging you a leg and arm to fix your problem. It sounds like it should be fairly simple. Hopefully, someone else knows exactly what your problem is.

Post how MinnKota helps...

I just had this problem. Unscrew the top cap of the motor. You'll see the wire going around a black gear. There's probably something stuck or going on in that area.

I'll look again. We did just that on the water and could find nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe in the garage, out of the rain I'll find something.

Any other ideas?

Make sure there isn't anything restricting the movement of the motor. I had an issue with my transducer cable being too tight . It wouldn't allow the motor to turn fully.

My buddy had a problem with his like that. The set screws in the top of the shaft (under the cover where the other guys are having you look) had ripped out. MinnKota has a kit to rebuild it that includes a metal ring to reinforce around the composite shaft plus adding two more set screws. If it is less than a yr old it should be under warranty. Good luck with the fix.

Well, I took it down further tonight. Ended up taking the head completly off. The shaft still will not turn more than 180 degrees. I think that tells me it is in the bearings. I will tackle it tomorrow to see how to get them out. (BTW I am yet to hear from Minn Kota, but it has only been 1 day since I contacted them. I will try the trusty old telephone tomorrow). Thanks for the ideas!

muskie! nut you were right. One of the set screws walked out and gouged the inner shaft and was keeping it from turning. Minn Kota got back with me just after I found it. I have asked if I can order parts through them cause it is way out of warranty. Thanks for the help
