I have a couple of Jackpot jerk baits. They are by far my best bait as far as strikes go. I have had a good number of fish hit both the black and silver/blue. HOWEVER, these baits, in stock condition have poduced a small percentage of hook-ups. Is there something I can do to modify them or am I just to anxious on the hook set. Thanks in advance.

Good Luck!

I would have to say that you are indeed to anxious on the hook set. The Jackpot is a great bait and I too have missed some fish on it. I feel that this is mostly due to pulling thebaitout of the fishes mouth before the mouth is fully closed. Seems to take a long time for them to really "get" the bait. Since slowing down a little on the hook set I have increased my hook ups. This is the area in which I would look to first. Ask Steve Cady for info, he is the Jackpot Guru.............

Tommy Mac,

The jackpot is one of my favorite topwater lures, caught my personal best on one! One modification you can do is to take shrink tube and put it on the back hook so the hook stands straight out from the back of the bait. This will help with those short hitters.
You have to fish the jackpot to get the feel for when to set the hook.

DON'T SET THE HOOKS UNTIL YOU FEEL THE WEIGHT OF THE FISH! I know you have heard this one before!

One of the best ways to catch fish on this lure is to not watch your lure. Stand in the boat and look at your buddy while having a conversation, this will eliminate the urge to set hooks before the fish has the bait. You will know when to set hooks because something will be trying to pull your rod out of your hands!

Good luck!

I too have lost some fish on this lure. I talked to quite a few people who use the Jackpot alot, and the general consensus is that you have to use a short rod. 6' being best, 6'6" at the longest. I was using a 7' and a 7'2" and was missing alot of fish. Since switching to a 6'6" rod, my hooking percentage has gone way up. Good luck.

I would have to disagree with the above!1)never take your eyes off the bait,2)For me the schrink tubing kills the action,3)my opinion,7'6" to 8'er works much better on me and the fish!If your missing fish on the JP it might not be you at all,SWITCH BAITS! I have excellent returns with a Danc`in Raider in these type situations! One mans opinion! Jeff

I agree with handyman on rods, I use long rods for my jackpots, and I use them an awful lot. I get much better hooksets with the longer rods, though I am 6'2" and can get away with a longer rod. It took me awhile, but it seems you have to wait even longer with a jp than with any other surface lures before setting. Fish like to really blow up on the side of these baits which is always a bigger explosion than most "suck-ins", just be patient, and wait for the rod to dip. I keep working the lure like normal till I feel the fish. Some dudes are moving the front hook back and claim it helps, I'm going to try that myself to see if it improves.

The board seems really HOT right now. Thought I'd try sneaking this through one more time. Thank you for all the above advice!

This does not improve hookup % but somebody told me recently they rig one inside a tiger tube.

JACKPOT GURU?

Thanks Musky One...I think?

Tommy Mac,

Are they missing? Are they knocking it out of the way? Or are you pulling it away? Could be any of these... The Jackpot by far moves more fish than anything else in my boat...except maybe a Jerko...but if you ask those that fish with me I have on one or the other 75% of the time. I miss fish on Jackpots and on other baits. I think the best way to ensure you get good hook ups is to work it as slow as possible and still keep tight action and a steady retrieve. My hook ups improved a ton when I used it a little slower and kept the wide glide as tight as possible. I still miss fish and I still pull it away from fish when I shouldn't. WAIT until you feel the fish before setting the hook. And if you learn how to do this everytime please teach me![] One other thing that has helped my hook ups and saves the paint a little. T the front hook...What does that mean? Look at the treble that hangs in front and the two hooks that hug the body of the lure. Take those two hooks on the treble and make them so they are flat against the bottom of the bait like a T instead of hugging the body. If that doesn't make sense email me at [email protected] and I'll forward a picture of a Jackpot for ya.

Hope I helped!

By the way ask anyone who fishes with me and they'll also tell you I hate Jackpots....

Moving the middle hook screw eye back one inch makes it pop tighter and louder. I also use two split rings, linking them togther on the middle hook to help hooking percentage.

Great bait when adjust it a little.[]

Has anyone out there tried adding a feather or two to the rear hook? Would this kill the action or not?
