Those of you who use one, (hey BN) do you adjust the handle to the other hole or leave it as is?

EA, if you want to move it fine, see which way you like it better....I leave it where it's at and it reels in the stuff i want better than any other reel i've tried...so i leave it there...maybe i'm missing something by not trying it the other way but you can if you want...

It surely wont hurt to move it. I've never held a 975, but from looking at some pictures it looks like you can move the reel so the handle grip is further from the center of the spool. This will give you a longer moment arm (less input force required to get the same output) on the handle and will give you more cranking power.

Brad, this will make it even easier to reel in the big blades that you are using that reel for.

I figure I'm going to be pulling XXX's with it for 6 days straight, that extra bit of leverage might keep my arms from falling off. The only part that makes me nervous about doing that is that now the original (center) hole is between the reel and the handle, which might be a weak spot. (Don't ask me how, but I have a tendency to bend reel handles!)

If it were ME, I wouldnt worry about that. You on the other hand...sounds like you have already bent a few...

I still doubt you have to worry about that. Penn reels are being used around the world to catch fish much tougher than a muskie

I just bought a penn 955 and 965 and bought two power handles. Those penn power handles are not cheap! I do need a bigger reel for bigger bucktails, I think I will look into the 975.

Yup, Baldy you are right..if you want even more leverage put the stock handle on the other setting..it moves the handle out just a bit more....try it both ways and see which way you prefer....

I contacted penn and they said i have to take it to a dealer!!! although its under warrenty the nearst cabelas is about 100 miles away and for the $6.00 part i cant justify driving there to drop my reel off have them send it to penn and then driving back and then.... driving back to get the reel. I called cabelas and they said they might be able to send me the gear but i am waiting to see about that guess it couldnt have failed at a better time since the water temps are high but i can always go river fishing so I am torn right now

Do you guys find the lack of the line guide on the 975 to be a problem?

?????????

The standard 975 has a line guide....
Go to Penns website and look at the 975....not the cs, not the ld, etc...just the 975!!!!!!!

UPDATE:

5 days throwing nothing but cowgirls, and the 975 performed flawlessly! The stock handle is nice and comfortable, (unlike some of the "other" power handles out there), it picks up line plenty fast enough to burn them if you want, it's comfortable to palm, and the push button doesn't hurt your tuumb like that other reel. Used the second handle setting to get a little more leverage, no problems with that at all. The push button sticks a little sometimes, but that's probably only because I didn't oil it before I used it. So far I'd give the 975 an A+!

That's a great report, esoxaddict. Now only if Penn can make a true right handed reel where a guy doesn't have to switch hands while casting.

Hey MSKY HNR
Are these recent acquisitions? I have been looking into one after stumbling upon BN's posts.

Did you get them off of eBay or from a shop?

Anyone one thought of putting together a group buy??

Many thanks Trevor
