I have 4 Calcutta reels & 3 Luna reels , the Calcutta is the work horse for big baits & big blade baits , the 203 & 253 luna are more of finness bait reels, the 203 & 253 reels should have the drag system up-grade to SMOOTH DRAG'S CARBONTEX DRAG WASHERS & SS WASHERS, the stock drag system is not as strong or smooth as the Calcutta reels. The 300 Luna reel is a big wide reel very hard to cast, but it makes a great reel to troll with, it has a 5 washer drag system and the same cast control system as the Calcutta, the 203 & 253 have a magnetic cast controll system more for 2 oz & under baits. <:{{{<>}}}<<

The TE is a better reel, but the Luna is the best reel for the money if that makes any sense. Although, if your goal is fast line pick-up and throwing big baits then the TE is worth the extra money IMOP. The Luna also has the most comfortable handle of any muskie reel (including the new iHSN). Both have been very reliable for me.

My TE is reliable but nowhere near as smooth as my Lunas (the anti reverse on my TE is kinda sloppy). Granted... my TE is older and has experienced more abuse than the Lunas... so the smoothness comparison between them isn't apples to apples.

I like them both, but plan to stick with the Luna until I can justify the extra expense of the TE.

The only issue I had with the TE was the "back up" anti reverse pin bending and creating a "ticking sound". I simply removed it, despite Shimano sending a replacement part. I viewed it as kinda like an appendix... it comes with it... but it isn't needed (heh heh). And for what its worth... my TE is currently at the shop for repairs. Anti-reverse issues. Nothing I"m concerned about... but it is some undesired downtime at peak season.

Long story short... I don't think you can go wrong with either reel.

I have used both... the TE is awesome but at a big time price. I bought 2 Luna's last year... they are SWEET! For the money... hands down the LUNA 300 is the way to go. Smooth and not one glitch in many weeks of fishing so far.

Check out the customer service from Daiwa vs. Shimano... I have delt with both and without a doubt the $100 is worth every penny, good customer service is priceless, something the Daiwa company lacks!!!

My buddy says the Luna is 100% more reliable.

I don't know about that. A friend of mine had a Luna basically explode the first week he had it. I believe he is still waiting to get it back, because they don't even offer replacement parts yet. (or didn't)

Not that they are bad reels or anything. Another friend of mine loves them. We will see how good they perform after 10 strait days of muskie fishing.

If I were to even consider a TE, I would go for it over the Luna. But why get a TE when the Calcutta B's are sweeeeet (just not as attractive as the Luna )

Will, if you are interested in throwing them both before making a decision, let me know and you can take mine out for the day to see what you think. I like them both but for the money I think the Luna is a better choice. Drop me an e-mail and let me know if you are interested.

Thanks Eric: The Cabelas points made the decision. Cabelas doesn't sell the left handed model of the LUNA so I went with the TE.

Love the post that claims a luna "Exploded" and then claims its not been replaced yet.

I have used Shimano Calcutta TE's and own 2 Diawa Luna 300's since last year. Both reels are awesome but for the money and duability hands down the Luna is the hot ticket.

I took the time to CALL Diawa about parts/repair and Warranty. They told me there is NO PROBLEM getting parts and if there is a defective reel out there they wouldnt try to fix it after a guy used it a week... they would have replaced it not repaired it.

I am sure you will be very happy with a Shimano Calcutta also. I just dont personally think its worth what you pay for a Luna in my opinion.

One of you guys has got to show me a reel that exploded sometime. I've never quite understood that term. It seems to imply that everything that could go wrong did.

I bought a luna this year, and now its going to crap already.... had the same problems with the st. croix ac 300. I have only had the reel for two months and its already messing up on me.

I was with my buddy this past week in Canada and he had problem with the magnetic control on the Luna. Sometime it would cast far and the very next time, it would be a very short cast. He ended up super gluing the magnetics in one spot. Did this late in the week, so I don't remember if it cured his problems of "short bus" casts.

I prefer the Luna personnally. Have had 3 te's go 'bad' after minimal usage, while my Lunas have been great(not perfect, but great). I agree that Shimano's service is fantastic, as I dealt with the department alot. Diawa is much slower from my experience, but if I can wait till the off season to send them in, it will be seemless.

I bought a TE last year, and I love the thing, only problem i've had is the anti reverse bent so I disposed of it also. I do have one coming though. Broke two weeks ago and I should have the part this week. Pretty good customer service i'd say..
