Posts: 8863 | Shawn Kellet, Dave Neusanger, maybe? Derrys? I know many people that frequent this site have had their hands in these things on various levels. Lets say I want to try to get size limits increased for a particular lake. Who do I talk to? What sort of support do I need? How do I get a solid scientific analysis done on that lake to determine if increased size limits are even a good idea? What about the local lake association? Should I join it, are they friend or foe? I know there's a ton of work to be done and it takes a long time, just hoping someone who has dealt with these issues first hand can give me a place to start. I have no doubt I can get local support from guides, muskies inc members, friends, clubs, etc. but I have no idea where to start, or who to contact. Anybody know anything they think would be helpful? PM me Thanks

Posts: 32955 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Local fisheries biologists first to see if support is possible there. Then, Guides, general angling population, and most importantly, the local Lake Association or like group. Be prepared, have ALL your ducks in a row, anticipate every negative and be ready to answer same with a positive. be ready for boisterous oposition, stay on course and patiently educate despite the inevitable poopstorm over the issue. Mike, Norm, anything to add? Reef Hawg?

| EA, if it is the lake I think it is...I think you would be better served just fishing and not putting too much time or effort into changing a size limit...maybe I'm wrong but the lake I think you are referring to doesn't have the "storied" history of a lake like Pelican which they got the change on....you are probably going to waste your time ...maybe I'm wrong but it will be a very big uphill battle in that part of that county.... | |||

| You need to work with the local DNR and fisheries biologist who is assigned the lake | |||

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | Steve hit the nail right on the head. The first person you need to get on your side is the local biologist. His help will be golden throughout the entire process. The second group to look at is local businesses. Local baitshops, campgrounds, resorts, guides, taverns. If you can influence them that the change would be good for their business and you can get their support you are way out in front of the curve. The lake association is next. If you can get support from these three areas, and publicize that, the battle is much easier. As far as someone thinking you are wasting your time....we got a whole lot of that when we started our Pelican Lake project. People thought we were nuts, and that it would never sail. Thank God we didn't listen to the naysayers. You will never know unless you put out some effort first. If you need any help in any area, zip me an email. Edited by nwild 7/17/2007 8:30 AM

| Norm I didn't mean to imply it was a total waste of time....it might not be...but Pelican has the "storied" history of fish over 50". Some lakes don't necessarily NEED a 50" size limit do they? The lake I think he is referring to has a healthy musky population and isn't heavily pressured like Pelican is...You had your musky population go down hill and you fought back and won with great success...I'm not a nay sayer on getting size limits raised but on some small bodies of water without the trophy lore behind them it "could" be a waste of time and efforts...didn't mean to imply that he shouldn't try though....never know unless you try right... good luck...i'd support it cuz it's near some of the waters i fish... bn | |||

Posts: 8863 | Thanks Norm! From what I've seen and heard, all the local musky anglers and guides would support increased size limits. Problem is they're too busy fishing to get anything done about it. Everyone saying "we need bigger size limits" doesn't get it done, though. Lake association: That could go either way. I will probably look into becoming a part of that, just to get a feel for what the general attitudes are from the non-musky fishing population.
