| Or is this somebody actually trying to help the great lakes. What's his angle to support this?

Location: milwaukee | The numbers the good Representative spouts are misleading and put in there for effect. Most likely that's 13b gals of mostly rainwater mixed with sewerage due to combined sewer configurations in the old parts of the city. It's not 13b gals straight from the toilets to the Detroit River....
And Chicago is no 'model', IMHO. They just send their overflows down the Illinois River towards the Mississippi instead of out to Lake Michigan.
But I agree that it is a problem that needs addressing. Citizens everywhere need to decide if they are willing to invest in the infrastructure to minimize these occurances (they can likely *never* be eliminated completely) at the price of higher taxes. Other than the status quo, the only alternative is to let it back up into your basements. |

Location: midwest | It never ends! Indiana just approved to allow BP to pollute Lake Michigan more than they already do. "Indiana regulators exempted BP from state
environmental laws to clear the way for a $3.8 billion
expansion that will allow the company to refine
heavier Canadian crude oil. They justified the move in
part by noting the project will create 80 new jobs.
The company will now be allowed to dump an average of
1,584 pounds of ammonia and 4,925 pounds of sludge
into Lake Michigan every day." |
