Some have asked where to get good epoxy. Here is the stuff I buy. Good set time, clear coat, bubbles come out easy, etc. etc. Also about the best price I have found. I get the two gal set but this guy has smaller stuff if you just want to screw around or epoxy some old lures.

Good guy, he ships fast too.

How would you compare it to Envirotex?
I saw it on e-bay, but am always sceptical about changing horses in the middle of a stream.
Have you used it, and what do you think.
Your opinion would be valued.
Thanks,

I like it a lot. I did use Envirotex some and also a prduct called Famewood (Home Depot). This stuff hardens a lot faster (12 hours). That helps me coordinate a lot better to put on multiple coats in a few days time. Seems to be a harder clear coat too than the stuff I used prior. I have not put a hammer to it yet but should. I did the hammer test on the envirotex and Famewood and both did well. I am on my 3rd orde of a two gallon set and no complaints here. Plus this stuff saves me some cash. hope that helps.

How long does it take to yellow? Is the stuff also brittle? I see 5 minute 2 ton epoxy recommed all the time by different people but as far as I'm concerned it's junk for baits for 2 reasons. One it's so brittle if you drop your bait on the ground it will shatter and second it will turn very yellow after being in the sun a very short time, like 2 hours.

You definitely don't want to use the 5 minute version but the "2-ton" Devcon which takes several hours to totally set up is a good clear coat.

Jed are you talking the 30 minute devcon. I've tried it and it yellows very bad to after a short time in the sun, very brittle also.

I guess I have to pipe in here....I have used devcon for years (30 minute 2 ton) it does not yellow....I have baits over 7 years old and there is no hint of yellowing. Musky cannot bite through it and that is why I use it....I have many baits that have caught multiple fish and you can barely see a tooth mark. Now if you want any further facts I will be glad to give them to you or show you.....

RE: Yellow

I have had some of my baits in my boat in the sun now for 40-60 hours (est) and no yellowing. Just my two cents.

Grunt have you tried the 30 minute devcon. rjbass's results are alot different than mine. After part of a day in the sun the white belly on my baits turned yellow. It won't take a hit from a hard object either without shattering. If the 30 minute stuff is so good I wonder why most people use the super slow drying Etex that's a real pain to use. 30 minute epoxy would be great if it didn't yellow.

Anyone tried epoxy from this company? www.epoxycoatingsco.com Kind of interesting if you can make it go off quickly with a UV lamp. Met the guy at ICAST a few years ago and just found his card! Anyway we use Envirotex and Liquidglass

Guest,(put your name in)

You can't be using the same epoxy. Devcon 2 ton S-31 does not yellow. Talk to all the bait makers that use it and ask them.....Etex is flexible, but musky can chew through it. I used to use it and switched to devcon a long time ago. This is not my first rodeo. I have been Musky fishing, guiding and making baits for a long, long time.

Here's what I've found to be true about the following epoxies:

Devcon 30-min.
Drys clear and does NOT ever yellow. Its the hardest top coat I've ever come across. An excellent choice for single coating a lure. Can become brittle if not allowed to cure under ideal or close to ideal temperature and humidity conditions (consult the paperwork). Failure of topcoat is more common if there is ANY moisture remaining in the paint. Oil and solvent-based paints must have an appropriate time to off-gas completely or the epoxy will lift and peel - no matter if you apply one or two coats of epoxy.

Envirotex Lite
Drys clear and won't yellow. An extremely durable, long-lasting topcoat and works best when applied as a 2 coat finish. It is at its best when used on hardwood and dense plastic lures. In comparison to other epoxies, it seems to bond better to water-based paints than the others do. Highly recommended on top of lacquers. Downside: single coats tend to fail more of the time if the cure is not done on a drying wheel. For the impatient, Envirotex takes too long to set up.

I've tried others too, but in my book, these are the two best epoxies.

As far as the Devcon 30 minute epoxy, do you order in bulk somewhere? It seems that using it in the 1 ounce amounts that you can buy at the hardware store would be quite pricey. Can you cover very many lures with a 1 ounce portion? I currently use envirotex but have been looking for something harder and the Devcon sounds like something I may want to give a try.

I use Devcon 2 Ton with great success. The 5 minute epoxy will yellow over time. The Devcon 2 ton will not yellow. It is really easy to work with and dries crystal clear and rock hard. I would reccomend it to anyone! Walmart sells it the cheapest at about $1.87 a tube. You can cover a few lures with one tube.

Fact is all epoxy will yellow over time if exposed to UV from the sun. Auto clear will not. The faster an epoxy sets the faster it will yellow and the more brittle it will be. This is not my opinion but a fact. Call the manufacter of devcon they will tell you the same thing. I'm not saying you can't use it for baits but the fast set will be brittle and yellow fast in the sun.
I've used devcon 2 ton 5 minute and 30 minute to many times for anyone to tell me it won't yellow and yellow fast, sorry but that's just the way it is and it's a fact! Don't take my word for it call the makers and get the facts from them. By adding more of a certain chemical....I won't bore you with the name, is how the set time is controled. It is also the very chemical that causes the clear epoxy to yellow in UV light. The more of it and the faster the epoxy sets up, but it comes with a price of yellowing faster and being more brittle. Will the fish mind your baits yellowing, probably not.

Has anyone ever used the devcon or others as a base epoxy and then covered it with envirotex for the final coats? With metal scale sides that I have been doing it takes forever to build up all the coats to get it smooth.
Thanks

I started with urethane and was spraying it on. No protection from teeth. I switched to Envirotec lite and have not looked back. I use water based paint so as has been stated it adheres better then devcon so its a no brainer for me. To help deal with the long dry times we have had to build multiple tumblers to keep the lure top coats even. I find it does not do as well against teeth penetration on the softer woods like Balsa and Cedar unless there are three or more coats applied. All in all I have no complaints with envirotec lite. I do not pour or roll my baits so I waste very little. Cost per lure is miniscule so its not a factor for me. We are building over 2,000 lures per year now and have no reason to stop using Envirotec. Its also available at my local Menards. Kingfisher
