I didn't see anything unfortunate about that catch!

Thanks for sharing, huge fish. Just glad it was a record becouse I'm like you, I like to see em swim free, and if they do have to die I like it to be for something! Can't help but notice many of the state record muskies are registered by non-musky fishers. Must say a lot about are catch and release ethics... or we just can't compete with jig fisherman using 6lb test mono without a leader!

The guy that caught this fish is a musky fisherman. He just happened to be walleye fishing when this one ate. Instead of all these big baits, maybe we just need to downsize to the 1" to 4" lures! Nah, I think I'll stick with the Double Cowgirls and other big baits!

Or could it be that muskie fisherman don't fish North Dakota (or other states where muskie is a rarity) for muskie?????

I'm also in agreement with "guest", nothing unfortunate about it. It boogles the mind that these folks that say "too bad he/she killed it", but yet they go out fishing for muskies and they themselves stand a good chance killing one, not by choice, but through delayed mortality or shorten their life span with a serious injury to the fish.

Thank you THA4 for filling us in on the news.

Did anybody else think that they needed DNA testing for this pure muskie????

Or could it be a cross with a pure and a fertile hybrid???? That would be something if that ever happened (just thinking).

Oh well the fish was dead and frozen, if they want to test it let them,It's only costing the TAX payers a little extra cash for the test anyway...

What? The DNR there wants to know what stocking this fish came from, right? Are you saying genetic study on a harvested muskie is a bad thing?

Nope, but the fact that they said they needed to do this to determine if it is a pure strain or a hybrid since they stocked both.

THA4, Your a deer hunter when was the last time a deer hunter released a deer? Its hard to get your deer in the record book without killing it. same thing for a Muskie if Cory Bosch would have released the fish it whould have never been a new state record. In Kentucky at 46#8* Cory Bosch's fish whould have allso been a new state record. That fish is going in my deadwell and on it's way to a certified scale. Congrautations Cory if I ever meet you I would like to shake your hand. Marv.

i wasnt trying to raise a fuss.....
but i will defend myself.
im a catch and release fisherman. I find it unfortunate because Muskies are in short supply in that state. if the fish is of legal size, then it is your right to keep the fish. but as devoted anglers, it is our responsibility to maintain the resource.
however, in states where there are very few muskies, like NoDak and Iowa, it makes more sense to me to put fish back to TRY to maintain the smaller population.

here is your difference ChinWiskers.....when i go deer hunting, i am out to KILL a deer, not catch him. when i am Fishing, i am out to CATCH, not kill.....
If i totally catch and release, then i feel i compensate for a fisherman who feels the need to keep everything he catches.
all im trying to do is maintain something that is not overly abundant, and i feel justified in doing so!

Is it possible that this guy caught his one trophy fish, in a place not known for them, and kept this one fish? Maybe you're taking it a step beyond by saying he needs to keep everything he catches?

From a friend that knows Corey, I took this out of an email I recieved monday:

Here is the picture of Corey’s skee he caught last weekend.. I’m not sure if its been finalized yet, but he has the current state record beat by 8 oz.. He had this fish stuffed in his livewell for 24 hours before reaching a certified scale (no stores open on the 4th)..

The fish has a small head and big body.. You think that fish still had more years to go??

He actually muskie fishes, its just when he caught this one he was using walleye gear and fought it for about 20min.. He tried to revive it for 45 min. with no go

End of story

There you go. And don't even TRY to suggest he should have cut the line. Beautiful fish, congratulations to the Angler.

Here in Iowa we have a huge problem with overharvest in our fisheries of every species.
you want to keep fish to eat, great!! no problem, you have that right. you want to keep a fish to promote the trophy aspect, Great! that is your call. just dont over look conservation especially when a resource is limited.
i simply implied that IMO certian fish in certian systems oughta be set free in order to conserve. if the fish died and was not able to be revived, no problem, it happens all the time, keep the fish and put it on your wall. there is nothing wrong with that.
if my opinion differs from somebody elses, fine! thats the great thing about opinions, we all are allowed to have them, right wrong or indifferent.
i did not imply that this fella in ND keeps everything, however, i will stick to my guns and remain C&R.
either way, that fish is an incredible fish, and a great example of what ND is capable of!!
hopefully more lakes make it into the musky program up there!!

THA4,

Do what I did when I was in Iowa. I begged my dad to built me a 5 acre pond and a few years later I had all teh 10lb catfish and 5lb bass I wanted to catch.

Lets try not to take Mr. THA4 out of context, I never heard him imply that the gentleman who caught the new state record keeps everything. Most of us purist musky fisherman have invested so much in release gear, proper handling and at times even sacrificing a decent photo with a good fish in order to see it released unharmed. I feel becouse of that we feel a sting when we see a walleye boat pull into the boat ramp with a 40"er laying on the floor (once again not refering to anyone in particular), or even worse one at the fish cleaning station. We see enough of it and it starts to sting even when it could be considered justifiable like in this case, and yes I'm from Iowa and see it all the TIME, much more probably than people in states with larger size limits or more education. Great catch, I'm glad to see it hit the record books (honest), he deserved to keep the fish of his lifetime, and who knows what I'll do in if I'm ever in his situation (and if its unrevivable than its a no brainer).

It's a renewable resource. They stock their fish, so if one of this size if kept, it schouldn't be the end of the world.

If the fish DIES, fine, keep it and mount it. Here is what bothers me; when a large fish is skin mounted, (killed) people say, "it was old, probably would have died soon anyway". How do we know that? There is no way to know that. Remember, there has never been a 50 pounder that wasn't a 30 then a 40 etc. One thing is certain, if it is dead, it won't get any bigger. I'm not ripping on this guy, just trying to give some perspective.

I'm also from Iowa, maybe because of our limited musky resource we're a little more protective.

I almost went to new johns this year for a week because I heard there is an awesome tiger musky fishery there. If I remember right, they have not stocked any pure muskies there for quite a number of years.

Re: Iowa

You guys in Iowa shoudl work on increasing the min. length to keep a muskie. The DNR is great to work with in Iowa. I used to fish Hawthorne for tigers over 20 years ago and I have heard it has since dwindled as a muskie lake. If I lived in Iowa still I woudl be calling the Iowa DNR to see what could be done about getting a better min. length for teh big girls...

we have tried this and the DNR thinks 40 inches is plenty....
the DNR is not really interested in upping the musky stocking here because it would cause a little conflict with the perch fishermen.....
we are working hard at this, but with llittle avail....
we hope to be heard one of these times....

Don't kid yourselves, Iowa sells ten of thousands of Muskies it produces at the Iowa Great Lakes Hatchery to other States. Tens of thousands to Michigan, Indiana and Illinios for a number of years. Okoboji and Spirit get 649 Muskies everyother year. They obviously only want a Muskie program that they can profit from, not one for the fisherman.
With the VMS thing going on, Iowa is the only State that can transport Muskies to other States now because they have no connection to the Great Lakes. I won't count on much more stocking in the future. ALL will be sold at a premium for sure now.

Guest, we are well aware what goes on with the fish leaving the state. This is just one of our frustrations. There was a meeting in March with the DNR where they disclosed the number of advanved fingerling muskies they traded to Missouri for CATFISH. This state is overrun with catfish, WTF are we trading muskies for catfish for.

That's unfortunate that Iowa exports Muskies and trades them for Catfish? What a joke. Okoboji could be awesome with a better stocking program.
