Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | Now this tells me a lot about why orange was a good color last year on Mil Lacs. Lots of people flushgin their goldfish in Mil Lacs? Do they make orange suckers? LOL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlAEtmO_eCE

Posts: 2024 | That little dude is one bad @$$ clown! I know cuz he sits in my basement everyday! His name is "Flash," and yes he would appear to fancy the orange feeder goldfish over the more naturally colored ones (makes you think about the whole, "go natural in clear water theory..."). I could sit and watch him for hours if I had the time! Unfortunately, he's getting too big for the aquarium! Esox50 aka Esox3650

That skinny water muskies video of yours was great! Good for you to have that spot and friends to share it with.

Let him roam free someplace safe only you know of, Lake X for Flash. Orange is a good color

Try orange+white on lakes with lake trout in them.

I kept expecting to see him burp.

He does sometimes. Once the goldfish is all the way down, he kind of flares his gills fast and opens his mouth, kind of like a snake resetting its jaw. ESOX50's dad.

It's illegal to use goldfish for bait in Wisconsin. You can, however, throw some orange paint and gold scales on some wood that swings enticingly from side to side when you twitch your rod tip.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I would concur that the gold ones get picked off first. Esox50, you may want to watch out for putting a number of goldfish in your muskie tank at once. Goldfish tend to have lots of bacteria and can really do a lot of damage. I had to learn the hard way. It took me over 6 months and 4 muskies to get my water back to normal. I now have another tank where I keep the "volunteers". Ever since I started doing that I haven't had a problem.

Posts: 284 | How do you go about getting a small musky like that for your aquarium? I have a 100 gallon tank that I was waiting to use for such an occasion.

Before putting them in the tank we wash them in a high sodium solution to get rid of any bacteria that may cling to the fish. So far (6+ months) we haven't had a problem. If there was a place around our house that sold fatheads that's what I'd be feeding them, unfortunately there's not.

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | I had numerous Peacock Bass, Redtail Catfish, Pike, Bass, and Muskies in my tanks over the years. They all start on guppies and then move into goldfish. The muskie would rip open the bag when I put it in the tank. I guess he couldn't wait. They would usually eat about 4 to 5 every week. It got spendy after a while. Plus my amazon fish would eat the others in the tank. The muskie was always the favorite when people came over,

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | I'm surprised at how long it took him to swallow the fish. I have had bass in a tank that were no more than 2 pds and they would eat 10 gold fish in the 2" range in just a couple of minutes........one right after the next! Maybe because of all their teeth musky like to crush their prey more?????? RM

Posts: 680 Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | You are correct Riverman. A Bass simply uses its cavernous mouth as a vaccuum to suck food to the back of the throat. The musky is designed to take on larger prey which requires it to be positioned head first to swallow. Very similar to a snake in its feeding methods...lie still and ambush food in one swift efficient movement.
