Location: Kildeer, IL | I went to pick up my boat from storage (Inside an attached garage), and found some brown fluid dried up on the side of my engine. After trailering home, I noticed a little more leaked out.
Does anybody know what kind of fluid this is?
Where is it coming from?
Should I be worried? I have a fishing trip next weekend, and the boat has to be ready for it.
The engine is a 1987 Evinrude 40HP Tiller.

| pop the cowling off to see where the origin of the leak is could just be excess fogging oil draining out of carboator ,if so don't worry. if origin is clynder you got some big problems .did the motor run good before storage? |

Location: Kildeer, IL | Good point. I never thought about the excess fogging oil. The motor ran great before storage. I had all of the seals checked, and the compression checked before the last outing. The seals were all in good shape, and the compression was good.
How would I know if the origin is from the cylinders? |

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | That looks like 2 stroke oil to me. Check to see that all your spark plugs are tight and all the hoses are good and tight. If that all looks good you may have a crack somewhere. |

| Could just be a spill, too. First, clean the motor up by wiping off all the oil and junk on it. Then try to locate the source. Check plugs, hoses, and seals. If it's got oil injection that would be the first place to look. It looks too dark to be gas/oil mix. Still, If you can't find the leak after looking for it try pumping the primer bulb in the gas line until firm and check again. If you still can't find it, you might consider letting the motor sit for a while or even driving it around on the trailer to shake it up a bit and see if anything comes out. Another option would be to take the spark plug wires off the plugs and turn the engine over a couple times and see if that pushes anything out.
If you can't find the leak after all that I'd run it and see what happens. If you have a cracked engine block (not likely) you'll know when you try to run it because it will a) run really poorly; b) make all kind of racket; or, c) not run at all.
I think that because the stuff is so dark that you've probably just got a spill under the hood. Fogging oil is a good guess, I think. Gas/oil is more blue than anything and would have mostly evaporated over the winter. I'd bet that you won't find a leak and the motor will run fine, but that's just a guess and I'm an amateur mechanic at best so take my advice with a grain of salt! |

| I have a '86 Johnson that does the same thing. Mechanic replace some seal and it stopped for a bit, but now is back. Has not caused a problem yet, so I am gonna let it ride unless I notice the engine acting up. |
