Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | When buying a big bucktail or spinner bait do you like to see the skirts tied with thread or with a small zip tie? Thanks! James Edited by Grunt Lures 5/17/2007 8:32 PM

James bucktail and marabou are never going to work with a zip tie. thread is the only option. zip ties can be used on silicone and flash, but should only be considered a second line of defense

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | The few I have tied with zip ties are all great. Not one hair, flashabou or silicon piece comes out when pulled hard. I do like the look of thread better though. I am just thinking thread rots (10-15 years down the road) but, the zip ties do not look as good but will last a long time. Thanks for the feedback. I know you guys have tied about 100,000,000% more than my 10!

To get the bulk required for most tails you need to tie in multiple layers. You cant do that with a zip tie. Edited by BALDY 5/18/2007 10:52 AM

I agree on tying. Bucktail, maribou or adding flashabou to some hair. I've been tying walleye jigs for over 30 years, and after putting one drop of fingernail polish over the threads, I have never had one come apart, except from being eaten. Same goes for bucktails. When I tie a bucktail body on a coil or on tubing like they use for Lake Michigan flies, the only way to go is tying. I don't know how I would add different color strands or layer hair to add bulk with a tie-wrap. I don't have enough hands. When I tie a bucktail body, I will usually layer 3-4 different colors, and will use sparse clumps of hair in between colors to develope a nice transitional blend. Now, anchoring silicone skirts is a different story. Whether pre-made, or made by mois, once I get the length right and get the skirt positioned right, I'll use a small tie-wrap. I do it on bass spinnerbaits too, just to avoid slippage after they've been ripped up a little. Beav

Posts: 326 Location: In the slop! | James, go to the Blaine expo next March and watch mike Ruff tie a Rad-Dog. He ties the feathers with thread and the rubber with a zip-tie. He has it figured out. For my baits, I like thread and lots of head cement. Baldy did a good job of explaining why. Edited by sledge51 5/18/2007 4:14 PM

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | I do use a small rubber slieve under the flashabou when using the zip tie. If not, nothing holds. With that rubber slieve the zip tie really gets tight. The other plus is its fast. But, I think the above comments will take me back to the table to make a few more with thread/cement. These are much more fun making than my Grunts. I think I have just made too many of those and need a change..... Thanks for all of the hints guys. I am sure others are getting a lot from your posts too.
