It's great when all the pieces of the puzzle fall into place. Like when you are having a great fish fry to close out the opening weekend and your roommate decides he would like to musky fish in the morning and asks if you are up for it. Well there is the 8 am class, but you havent been to it in a while, the guy lectures about nothing and you are acing the class anyways so you reason its legitamite to skip and go fish for a few hours. Get out on the water and notice the plug isnt in right away as opposed to halfway down river when you are litearly 'up a creek'. You hand your roommate a jailbird suick and on the first cast he lets it float a bit in the current and has a musky take a peek at it when not even reeling in. You think....man this is going to be a great day. You hook on old faithful and toss it out there a few times. No more than about 5 casts in Girtha decides it would like a snack. The fish takes a good roll and you feel the fish on the line. Everything is coming together as planned! This is great! Then the hookset.....You slam into it with all you got....fish feels like its pinned up good....then, line goes slack. UGH! Fish is off. Roommate looks at you and says....got any more of those baits? Of course, you hand him a slightly different pattern. He tosses it no more than 10 times and Girtha trys for round two! You see it roll and then for the hookset....Set hooks, then line slack again! Cripes! Lost it again! Time to give your spot a rest. You move up a bit and get out of the boat. Find a good place on shore to fish from. About 20 minutes go by when you are working your bait into shore then WHAM fish comes up and eats in about a foot of water! Lets try this hookset idea again.....Feel the fish on set hooks....two thrashes....gone! Oh for crying out loud. A few casts later BOOM fish come into the shallow again and trys to eat, this time you are ready....all hunched over watching the fish do its work and then waiting for that tug on the bait so you can let out all the frustration over the other missed fish on this one hookset.....That time never comes! Fish missed the bait all together. So its nice when almost everything goes just as they should.

Both fish were mid to upper 40's, definately not slouches! Maybe this afternoon I can get back out and take revenge!

Sounds like "fishus interruptus." Man, I might need a cigarette after all that excitement!

Nice Brother!
Kevin, Jeff and i, from The Sportsman all scored on legals tonight trolling one of the "pool lakes". Thank God Jeff and Kevin brought their cameras. I will post pics in the AM when I get them.
Lessons learned tonight (other than it is nice to get the boat slimed so early) are:

1)Thank God for a wife that understands my OCD of fishing

2)Early season fishing can sometimes kick butt

3)Time spent with friends (new or old) is time well spent, no matter if you get a fish or not.

4) no matter how much of a rush you are in, DONT FORGET YER CAMERA!

5)Trolling, even after dark is effective (ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ is a beautiful sound when it's your clicker).

6)Muskys kick butt!

7)ALWAYS wear your game face. you never know what is behind the next corner (more true in real life than fishing).

8)Reflective tape on your planer boards (I don't care if you bought them today or five years ago) is a MUST!

The fish will come Mike, the season is early. Sounds like you have the pattern down good on the river right now. I'm heading out Wednesday morning for a few hours if you are interested.

Your story is much better than mine, but a few nights ago while night fishing for walleyes (can I say that word on this site?) I was throwing what amounted to a top water minnowbait, due to the SUPER slow retrieve. I had an 'eye blow up on it 4 times in a row, then nothing on #5 and she finally ate it on cast #6. I tried quick sets, really slow sets, everything. It only hooked up when she homed in on that bait and nailed it good. Top water rocks....even with 'eyes!
Best of luck when you go back!
