this fish decided to allow it's picture to be taken this weekend - regional lake with a muskie population that is basically not fished at all. it's no "lake X" but there's no one out there fishing muskies, either.

and as always, "the one that got away" (from the camera) was much bigger, pushing that magic mark and very girthy, pre-spawn.

this area might need some exploration opening weekend...

I hope somebody doesn't recognize the lake bottom. Next thing you know there will be 80 boats on that spot.

Awesome pic...my question is what the heck were you doing out there at midnight??? Great to see "natural" pics of muskies.
Thanks for sharing, Jake

ah, my bad. i didn't take the picture, a friend of mine did.
being out there at midnight? he likes to go bowfishing for carp...and as a result is a _great_ information source on where the muskies are hanging out early in the year on different lakes around here.

Great picture. That kind of hurts to see that because it's the first year I have not got out and shined some of the local lakes to see whats around. Every year before the opener, about two weeks before it we go out and cruze the shallows to see the local muskies, walleyes, carp, gar, gills, crappies, etc. Believe me, it's worth going out and looking around. You would be surprized how cool it is.

If your going out to look around please don't bring any rods or spears. People will be around to check you out. We only bring batterys and spot lights. Ok, some beer also.

i just got another report from someone else who was out fishing this same lake for bass. (that's a hint, btw)
he caught 39" and 47" muskies yesterday on small (3-4") crankbaits thrown tight to the rocks. he reported that they were very aggressive.
hmmmm...

Lambeau, if he was out throwing for bass, would this happen to be on a river system somewhere? Because the season isn't open for bass seeing that it doesn't open till Saturday.
