Just picked up a used 6500 c and the handle is really stiff. Anybody know how to get these so spin smoother. When I take it apart the spool spins freely and the handle cranks fine, but when you put it back together it's like it's all gummed up. Any clues to fixing this.

Check to see of there's not an extra washer in the spool tension adjustment knob cap. One of my reels had three of them in there instead of just one.

I know that I should use ABU oil but I don't have any. Is this a silicone or water based lubricant? Does anything else work. I figured out that my worm gear is dirty by getting it wet. upon doing so the reel loosened right up whats the easiest way to clean a worm gear and what type of lubricant do I use.

Follow lambeau's thread on cleaning abu's. To get the worm gear all the way out you'll have most of the reel apart anyways. Get some brake cleaner to clean all the oil/grease off all the parts and invest in some good reel oil and grease (I think abu is silicote/silicone based). You will be amazed at how much junk is packed in the casing that houses the worm gear.

Almost anybody can tear down and rebuild a 5000 or 6000 series reel. I mean, if I can do it, anybody can. Lambeau's directions are where to start.
