how are the pflueger reels for musky? are they strong enough to handle a musky?
they seem like nice reels but not sure if they are strong enough.

The Trion 66 is a good reel, built like a tank. Great value on these reels.

The Maina reel and the Gander Mountain reel are made by Pflueger and are built on the same frame.

I have a Gander Mountain GS66 which is built by Pfleuger for Gander Mtn. It is the same as the Trion 66. I have used it for a couple of years and it seems to be good. I also have had good results with the Pete Maina series reels sold by BPS, but according to Pete Maina they are not made by Pfleuger or Okuma. The Pete Maina reels appear similar, but they are definitely a bit bigger with a wider spool. All in all if you are comparing these reels to a 6500C3 they stack up quite well. I'm not so sure they would compare well to a Shimano Calcutta though, but for the money they are good reels. The Gander reel is probably the best value by itself (especially if on sale), but the Pete Maina series reels are quite deal if bought in a combo with one of the Pete Maina rods.

I have a Trion 56 and 66 and couldn't be happier. Both very strong and very dependable...still have to try to figure out the brake/locking unit. If I'm not mistaken, I beleive to loosen the "brakes", you take apart some of the reel and adjust it on the inside of the reel. I may be way off and should really find out as I need to loosen one of mine.
If anyone on here could give me some advice that'd be great. I would appreciate it.
Great quality musky reel.

I have a Trion 56 and 66 and agree they are a super reel for the price and after a couple years of use I have no complaints.

I've got a 56 and a low profile that I like. Cabelas also sells a rebadged unit under the "Salt Striker" name. Model SS5600X and SS6600X.

I think you got it. Undo the thumbscrew and pull the spool out and the brake adjustments are in there. Push the in to turn some off as I believe it comes from the factory with them all turned on. The 56 has 4 and the 66 has 6.

Actually the BPS Maina reels are not made by Pflueger/Shakespeare....Maina told me so himself...think it's Okuma, not sure. My friend has a Trion 66 that has had nothing but problems; search the net, you'll find more stories to that effect. My original Maina (black) reels were apparently built by Penn--that's what I'm told--and they're still fantastic 8 years later. I'm not trying to bash Pflueger, I just think there are better reels out there.

Sure there are better reels, but not at the price these sell for. If your on a budget this is a great way to go. I have 3 Maina reels and 1 Pflueger reel... and yes they may look different from the outside but they are for sure the same inner parts. In fact you can interchange the parts... I have done it.

The only problems I have had was a easy fix... maintanance! Just pop the side plates off and lube everything where your suppose too then clean it up and go back fishing. I have NOT broken any parts... its just sensitive to dirt and water getting into the reel and will act up when it gets contaminated. But most all reels will require some maintanace.

Last year I bought a Gander Mountain GS66. After only a couple weeks the spool got stuck tight in the reel, so I couldn't remove it to adjust the brake. Have no idea how that happened. Anyway, they exchanged it no questions asked and the other reel worked well all year. It seemed to "scream" fairly easily during the cast, so I added oil to it fairly often. I think taking it apart and properly greasing and oiling it will fix that problem though.

The Gander reels cost $80 (I think the Pflueger is about the same price), and in my opinion are pretty nice reels for the money. I will be buying another one this year to put on a new rod.
