has anyone experienced poor drag performance on these reels? model CVL400 (the wide spool) i bought one over the weekend and the drag seemed to work when i spooled it. but 15 minutes into the day, the drag won't tighten enough to even hold up to a hook set. i always loosen the drags when off the water so the disks don't compress. i'm taking it back tomorrow. but is this a common problem with these models?
thanks,
kevin

Did you put mono backing on the reel? If you don't and you are using superline the entire amount of line can spin on the spool and it will seem as if the drag isn't working!

Did you use the uni-knot to tie the mono to the superline?

sorry to say i don't remember the name of the type. did a google search for a braid to mono knot. it's similar to the uni knot, but the mono line is an overhand knot. i did test it and there was no slippage. only used enough mono to cover the spool with a few wraps deep. if i ever end up to that last 20 yds, i'll have one for the books at the other end. because of the mono diameter the knot was a little bigger than i would have liked.

Another option is to put a wrap of athletic tape on the spool before the braid goes on. Then the braid can dig into it.
