Location: Madtown, WI | what should i use for twisting leaders?
I use a tool sold at Gander Mountain. I don't remember the name of it but it looks like a c-clamp. It only costs around $6 if i remember right.
how many twists?
with this tool i wrap 1 inch of wire, so about 3-4 twists
how long should i make them?
with swivels and snaps, my leaders run about 11-12 inches
what kind of swivels and where should i get them?
again gander mountain, if nearby, should help you out. I use 150# stay-lock snaps so I look for any swivel of about the same strength and size. Ball bearing are better but will cost a lot more, they can be reused though. I've never had a problem with the regular cheap swivels so I'm not switching.
There has been probably around 100 muskies caught on my leaders and have never had one fail. I think the reason I have less problems though is because they used to cost $5 per, so I would try and make them last... big mistake. Now they only cost less than a buck to make so I switch whenever I start to get nervous.
Hope this helps!
