Location: north central wisconsin | Greetings,
A little background... I have been running a dual pro with 6 amps per bank for years. Been a great system, though at times I wish I could get a quicker charge. Now, the rig I just picked up has a 10 amp per bank dual pro. Great... I thought. Lost the starting battery bank, went through all of the checks, and it is bad.
Soo.. called Dual pro and they said they'd replace it(out of warranty now) with a new one for a trade price. Cool. Now, they sent a new one and it is a 15 amp per bank. This is the biggest charger that dual pro makes and it is very very heavy.
My question is this: Do I really need 15 amps per bank, and wouldn't 10 be more than enough? Is it possible to charge the batteries too quickly? I am concerned on the weight issue(it is probably 10 lbs more) as much as anything and don't want to add where not needed. Might be better off sending the 15 back for the next model class down(SE series) 3 bank 10 amp, then maybe putting an on the go charging system in. Anyone using the on the go with success? Sorry for so many questions, but I just want to be sure I really need/would realize benefit of the 15 amp model before putting the heavyweight in the rig and don't want to sacrafice battery life as a result. |

Location: Yahara River Chain | The worst think for a battery is in a state of discharge. Nothing shortens a battery life quicker than leaving them in a state of discharge. Therefore a quicker charge is more beneficial that a slow rate. So a 15 amp charger is better than a 10 amp. It will charge it quicker and go to the float mode and you are set for another day of fishing. What more can you ask for?
The only way you could have too much is when putting a high amp charger on a very small battery like a motorcycle battery. What happening is it recharges so fast, that it boils all the acid out of it - which is bad. The size batteries you have in your boat should easily handle a 15 amp per bank charger. |
